About an hour's drive from Adelaide is a quaint and quiet little town called Eden Valley. Surrounded by rolling hills of vineyards and many red gums, the town is known as the "Garden of Grapes and Gums". Though Eden Valley is famous as a boutique wine region in South Australia, attracting tourists to its cellar doors, the town also has much to offer those more interested in the history and beauty of the region.

During our visit there recently we discovered many interesting things to see. On the tree-lined main street is the Eden Valley Hotel and beautiful stone buildings. Also along the street on the pavements is a trail of historic silhouettes with signages telling the stories of early settlers and the history of the town.

A little walk up the street is the St Petri Lutheran Church, a beautiful stone building with a dramatic steeple and bell tower. This is actually the second church built in 1912. The first church, built fifty years earlier in 1862, was a grey cement building on the same site to the south.

Not far from the town is another attraction, the Eden Valley scenic lookout. Here you can enjoy a panoramic view of the region. A huge cross stands on the hill. The early settlers were Prussian Lutherans who arrived in 1843. Scattered in the lookout are rocks with plagues telling the history of the town. There are also picnic tables and chairs to sit and enjoy the view.

A short drive from the town is the historic Herbig Family tree. Johann Friedrich Herbig, came from Prussia in 1855 and made his home in this hollow red gum. Signages with pictures tell of the stories of the Herbig family.

If you are in the region between the Barossa and Adelaide Hills, do stop by and discover Eden Valley . You will not be disappointed.
