Edelweiss Bavarian Restaurant is a hearty German restaurant that serves authentic German meals and beer. It is located on the Pacific Highway 2km from Coffs Harbour central and you should look out for the iconic big windmill building.

As we entered, I thought we were transported into one of the traditional Bavarian inns. The interior setting has all the European feel to it. I was quite excited to dine inside a working windmill because it was definitely a unique dining experience and something fun. My friends were excited for different reasons than mine. They had their eyes on the traditional German meals and German beers.

We were surprised to find was packed with people on a Monday night. It was so popular that the three of us had to wait for a while for any table service so we started with some drinks at the bar first.

I had a strawberry and lime cider and it was a lovely blend of cider infused with strawberry and lime juice. It was not too sweet and tasted quite refreshing after a long tiring day.

The manager apologized for the delay and explained that it was an unusual precedent to see so many customers on a Monday night and they were a bit short-staffed. Despite being very busy, our waitress was friendly enough to give us her recommendations and checked upon us every now and then. We were well-looked after.

My friends were immediately struck by the crumbed brie cheese in the starter menu. The soft creamy brie cheese cubes were crumbed first then deep fried to golden. They were served hot with raspberry glaze and a side salad.

When we bit into it, it was super crunchy on the outside with an oozing melting brie at the center. We could have eaten loads of these and it was definitely a pleasurable moment.

For mains, my friends went for the house made schnitzels. We had to wait a long while for our meals to arrive, which was not surprising as the restaurant was solidly packed.

One of my friends had the Jager Schnitzel - a pork crumbed schnitzel served with fried mushroom, bacon sauce, mashed potato and side salad; it was a generously sized serving. It certainly delivered a nice crunchy sound and he was pleased with it.

My other friend had the Wiener Schnitzel - Viennese style veal schnitzel served with German potato salad. The veal schnitzel was perfectly crumbed and it tasted great with the German potato salad. There were a lot of carbs on this table and we loved every bite of it. The size of this schnitzel was equally generous and I applauded my friend when she finished it.

I had the mixed sausages platter and it took the longest time to arrive. However, I was wowed by the size and the presentation of the platter. Edelweiss serves everything in very generous portions, so even though I ordered for one person, the platter was sufficient to feed three people.

This was a lovely tasting platter of various German sausages - Bratwurst, Nurnberger, Cheese Kranskys, Curry Wurst and Frankfurters served on red cabbage, sauerkraut and mashed potato. The sausages were succulent and delicious. The accompanying sauerkraut and the specialty mustard provided a lovely balance of flavours to the assorted sausages. However, as much as I loved my meal, I simply could not finish the platter.

It was our first time here so we did not realize serves everything in extremely generous portions, so next time we will be prepared to bring our appetite so we can thoroughly enjoy their hearty carb-enriched food.

Overall, we had a really pleasant dining experience and the food was really tasty. However, we had a really early start in the morning and we were feeling so exhausted by the end of the meal that we all wanted to call it a night.

is hugely popular in the quiet regional town of Coffs Harbour and I certainly highly recommend it. It is a great place to catch up with friends, the environment is cozy and good German food with beer just rocks.
