Holden has always been synonymous with Australia, even if the company was a subsidiary of General Motors in America-General Motors Holden is the Australasian branch. For the most part the cars have been manufactured and assembled here, with great pride and skill, and some models were imported. Australia's car first carrying the Holden badge was the 1948 sedan-preclude to the ever famous FJ Holden. The 'FJ' was our pride and joy, and the first real affordable and reliable car as the post-war boom period saw global growth and development.
Australia has always been recognised as a harsh and barren place, with roads that eat cars. Holdens have always been the car to fit the bill under these conditions. Holden took part in the early Sydney to Melbourne time trials and records set along roads that were mostly, little more than bush tracks and farm roads. These time trials were amazing feats of endurance by both car and driver. The events were held prior to the days of Highway 1. For more information about the history of Holden click here .The 60's and 70's saw many models that are now part of the hall of fame at the Holden Museum. The first Monaro lines up with the
late 90's revamp and heralds the changes in our motoring history. The museum has a great range of memorabilia in their gift shop, and entry fees are very reasonable. Opening times are 9am to 5pm 7 days a week. See their website for more information. You can also find the museum on Facebook . You can learn about prototypes that were never released, the changes in engine, suspension and body component technology with each generation of production. There are interesting facts about the Holden family who started with a saddlery business and moved in car body manufacture and later merged to
create the emerging General Motors Holden.Perhaps the man who is the epitome of the Holden race driving team is Peter Brock , and during the many years of Holden versus Ford battles, Peter Brock has taken the flag 9 times-he also drove for Ford, Porsche, BMW, Volvo and Peugeot. His legendary popularity will never wane with race goers. 'Rocky' or 'Peter Perfect' as he was often known, was a major part of Holden history.
There are Holden Car Clubs across the land and here are links for those in your state. If you want to restore your own, then these clubs will help with a mine of information, tips and advice, spare parts channels and mates to lend a helping hand.
