The date for the annual Ebony & Ivory Ball has been set and tickets are available now.
This is the excuse you've been waiting for to don your sparkly evening dress and dust off your dancing shoes! It's also an opportunity to help raise much needed funds for the Homicide Victims' Support Group (HVSG).
The HVSG is a unique organisation - one of a kind in New South Wales. It was established in 1993 by the parents of Anita Cobby and Ebony Simpson, both families having lost their daughters to murder. HVSG offers counselling and support to families and friends of homicide victims as well as other services, including Ebony and Ivory Houses - cottages, set in beautiful, calm and safe surroundings, giving victims' families a place to go when they feel overwhelmed with everyday life. Here, families have the opportunity to spend some quiet time alone or with each other.
In addition, HVSG is currently working towards establishing Grace's Place, a trauma centre for children and young people. It will be a world first – a residential trauma recovery centre for children who have lost someone to homicide.
In New South Wales, 1 murder is committed every 3 days. Murder doesn't discriminate and, sadly, doesn't go away. The victims of homicide go beyond those who die; they include those who continue to live - with memories, sadness, grief - changed forever. There are currently over 3700 families living with this - and the number continues to grow.
In addition to helping its members through counselling and other services, HVSG has worked tirelessly to change numerous pieces of legislation in this area and is continuing to do so. Currently, HVSG is working on changes to the Mental Health Act.
All services provided by the HVSG are free of charge - 365 days of the year.
The Ebony & Ivory Ball is a wonderful event, supporting an amazing organisation - where dancing celebrates life and helps those who have lost loved ones to learn to live and celebrate again.
So get your family and friends together and book your tickets now for a night of great food, entertainment and dancing. More information about the event and tickets are available by contacting the HVSG office on 02 8833 8400.
We ought to dance with rapture that we might be alive... and part of the living, incarnate cosmos. - D.H. Lawrence
