Sometimes when you're in the middle of nowhere, you come across places that were once somewhere. Eba railway siding is a remnant of one of those old places that once thrived but now almost nothing remains.


Eba was once a lively small village on the Morgan railway line. Nowadays, a weathered station platform is all that remains. It's just off the Thiele Highway about ten kilometres west of Morgan. The highway is flat and straight out this way so the sudden flash of colour by the road catches the eye. What stands out in the dry and sandy landscape is the colourful collection of characters arranged around a railway station sign.

The strange sight really did make me want to stop and investigate. It's a whimsical display that's drawn the attention of photographers for some time. The concrete platform stands sentinel, dwarfed by the vast plains and big sky all around. There was some mystery surrounding who created and maintains the display but from research, it appears nearby farm owners have a hand in looking after it.

There's a small plaque describing some of the history of the area. The village of Eba once had a blacksmith, grocery, school, post office and a busy sawmill for shipping firewood to Adelaide. According to the story, living in Eba in the late 1800s seems to have been a frugal and tough life for many. The plaque is full of interesting information not found anywhere else.

If you're on a road trip to the Riverland, Eba railway siding is on the route via Morgan described in this article. It's worth stopping for a photo opportunity and a bit of wander through history.
