The latest addition to Ettalong Beach's trendy selection of exciting boutique cafes and shops is an outlet offering relatively traditional fare. EB Burgers, a friendly and unpretentious cafe-slash-coffee-and-burger-bar, offers a small menu and no-fuss outdoors dining area which will provide satisfying refreshment to Central Coast holidaymakers and locals by the dozen. Situated in the heart of the suburb just off the main street, EB is manned by a team of cheerful flannied-up blokes whose passion for good tucker is matched only by their cumulative beard length. While the stripped-back pop-up feel might put off less adventurous diners, there's nothing to be scared of here: accompanying the food menu are a selection of chutneys for purchase, as well as a killer set of healthy smoothies.
The vegetarian burger offering at EB - original and delicious
The food, though, is the real deal here. Meateaters and seafood fans will be impressed that the 'Burgers' tag doesn't limit the place's innovation, with a crisp-looking fish and chips option, as well as soft-shell tacos straight from Sydney's Inner West. My choice, the vegetarian burger offering, was not only satisfying but also impressively original: thinly-shredded and dressed beetroot is matched with a patty suggesting Indian spice flavouring, and the sweet potato fries are actually shaved slices of kumara fried into gorgeously crunchy chips. It's a mouthwatering take on the standard Aussie veggie burger option, and one welcome in an area whose meatfree options can sometimes be lacking.
EB Burgers' location on the doorstep of Ettalong's main attraction - the water - makes it an appealing location for a weekend lunch - but in truth it was the thoughtful service, cool presentation, and relaxed atmosphere which make it a real winner. Dig in!
