Today's promise of grey skies and rain finally prompted me to head out to Oakleigh in search of my favourite paint shop, Velvet Paints, on the corner of Atherton Road and Atkinson Street. I figured I better get on to painting my home before winter sets in and its too late.

I have not been to Oakleigh in a while, and I'm so glad the sun was shining during my time there. I immediately felt cheerful as I walked amidst the hustle and bustle and upbeat vibe of Eaton Street Mall (yep, I decided I'd go have some fun browsing and gormandising before I talked paint colours). I felt childlike rediscovering the place, smiling to myself as I listened to the sounds of happy people catching up over food and coffee.

I stopped in at some of my favourite places like the Craftee Cottage wool shop, which is set up in such a way; you can't wait to discover what is around the next bend. They also run a lot of craft and knitting classes.

A pop into the large Salvos store always brings out the bargain hunting/recycling predator in me; envisioning how I'm going to shape and shift and deconstruct an item to transform it into something else.

Le Von Lingerie Factory outlet is always a good spot for bargain sleepwear and underwear, where the average price for nightgowns and pyjamas are between $10 and $20. La Figure Lingerie also has their clearance store in the mall, amongst a plethora of other stores and eateries.

Oakleigh Centro lies at the end of the mall as does the train station, which brings you right into the heart of if you're considering using public transport. Very convenient.

Meat Me was my chosen place for lunch before deciding it was time to face the paint shop. They have been there around 15 months and the place is massive, occupying both sides of the street with their restaurant.

Largely influenced by a Greek community, the menu has a good range of souvlaki, gyros, chargrilled skewers and a burger bar, not to mention a good section of delicious sounding mains. They are licensed and carry red, white and Greek wines along with Greek coffee on top of the usual beverages. The price range for food is between $4 (skewers) and $20 (Mains) with a Kids Menu at around $6.90 per meal.

Tummy full, I headed to Velvet paints, happy in the knowledge that I was going to get good service and value for money. If you've not been to Oakleigh lately, go on a discovery tour of and Atherton road and have a great day.
