Today's promise of grey skies and rain finally prompted me to head out to Oakleigh in search of my favourite paint shop, Velvet Paints, on the corner of Atherton Road and Atkinson Street. I figured I better get on to painting my home before winter sets in and its too late.
I have not been to Oakleigh in a while, and I'm so glad the sun was shining during my time there. I immediately felt cheerful as I walked amidst the hustle and bustle and upbeat vibe of Eaton Street Mall (yep, I decided I'd go have some fun browsing and gormandising before I talked paint colours). I felt childlike rediscovering the place, smiling to myself as I listened to the sounds of happy people catching up over food and coffee.
Eaton Mall and Atherton Road shopping and cafe strip.
I stopped in at some of my favourite places like the Craftee Cottage wool shop, which is set up in such a way; you can't wait to discover what is around the next bend. They also run a lot of craft and knitting classes.
A pop into the large Salvos store always brings out the bargain hunting/recycling predator in me; envisioning how I'm going to shape and shift and deconstruct an item to transform it into something else.
Le Von Lingerie Factory outlet is always a good spot for bargain sleepwear and underwear, where the average price for nightgowns and pyjamas are between $10 and $20. La Figure Lingerie also has their clearance store in the mall, amongst a plethora of other stores and eateries.
Oakleigh Centro lies at the end of the mall as does the train station, which brings you right into the heart of Eaton Mall if you're considering using public transport. Very convenient.
Meat Me was my chosen place for lunch before deciding it was time to face the paint shop. They have been there around 15 months and the place is massive, occupying both sides of the street with their restaurant.
Largely influenced by a Greek community, the menu has a good range of souvlaki, gyros, chargrilled skewers and a burger bar, not to mention a good section of delicious sounding mains. They are licensed and carry red, white and Greek wines along with Greek coffee on top of the usual beverages. The price range for food is between $4 (skewers) and $20 (Mains) with a Kids Menu at around $6.90 per meal.
Busy morning. Reporters and Camera-men filming a news segment on smoking in the open environment of Eaton Mall.
Tummy full, I headed to Velvet paints, happy in the knowledge that I was going to get good service and value for money. If you've not been to Oakleigh lately, go on a discovery tour of Eaton Mall and Atherton road and have a great day.
Eaton Mall is a fantastic place and full of atmosphere too. The food is great as is the coffee. It doesn't matter which age you are, you're always welcome. Lots of conversation within groups and lots of smiling and laughing people all out to enjoy the ambiance. You have such a plethora of places to choose to eat from and to sit inside or out.. Then you decide that you might move off to another cafe which i did with a friend after our mains and we decided to do a dessert and coffee. Nikkos and Vanilla are two places that come to mind but let me say that these two arent the only places for that. Wow you can go up station street and eat Indian food or Asian food or go to the European Deli which has everything or go to a French bakery too heading East from Orexi. There is just so much do eat, do, see and delight in. The Salvos is a great place too to find great clothes/h/bags/shoes etc. Good quality too and a great range of paperback/hard back books.
The at the top of the Mall in Atherton Rd looking West is a lovely park which has a rotunda and ample parking.
So you want to listen to great weekly music and also eat for dinner then go to the RSL which is also THE CARAVAN MUSIC CLUB and you can eat there from Thurs to Sun but be warned book! I am waiting patiently for smoking to be banned in outdoor eating areas before I can return to Eaton mall. There are so many smokers and the stench fills the air so how can one enjoy the sunshine and delicious food? A ban on smoking will finally allow everyone to enjoy Eaton mall, there will be more customers than ever. I don't understand why we are lagging behind the other states on this one, health and well being is far too important.
