On the Gold Coast The Brickworks Centre, 107 Ferry Road, Southport is undertaking the city's largest rooftop beehives project providing new and secure habitat for the bees and producing a signature 'Brickworks' flavoured honey. The Brickworks Centre officially unveils its rooftop hives at its inaugural 'EAT PLAY LIVE' lifestyle event on Saturday, 12 September, 2015 opening at 9.00am and running all day until 6.00pm.

Come along and be among the first to try the signature 'Brickworks' flavoured honey.

Entry to the celebration is FREE and, as part of the EAT PLAY LIVE event, there will be free food and wine tastings, samples of the new Brickworks honey, live music and plenty of entertainment for the kids including flower crown craft and colouring competitions, face painting, balloons and toy and game demonstrations.

Other attractions available include the outdoor picnic space, Arbour Noshery. It's here you'll find an incredible array of pop up stalls offering amazing gourmet food, which can be enjoyed with a cocktail or glass of wine as you relax with some great DJ music.

You can also take a stroll down the Living Lane, featuring a live art installation by graffiti artist Gus Eagleton, and join in 'giant' games like Jenga and an 'Insta-printer' which instantly transforms social media photos into take-home polaroids.

This is going to be a fantastic day for the whole family to enjoy and a great opportunity for you to experience shopping at The Brickworks Centre, home to the renowned Ferry Rd Markets. Unlike all the other retail precincts on the Gold Coast The Brickworks Centre has an incredible mix of fine food, high end fashion, chic homewares and innovative health and wellbeing offering 45 different retailers including boutique brands such as, The Standard Market Company, Reef Seafood, Dune Outdoor Luxury, Merlo and St Barts alongside national brands that include, King Living, Kathmandu, Kookai, Freedom and Miele.

The Centre's retailers will also be providing some incredible opportunities, such as Essence of Living's free outdoor Yoga and Pilates class, boutique fashion retailers offering exclusive previews of new season stock and well-known artists and designers showcasing their latest work.

While you are wandering around keep an eye out for fantastic in-store specials, prizes and giveaways. Here's one you'll really need to check out, Dune Outdoor Luxuries is giving one lucky guest the chance to win a $2,900 deco chaise and side table – how good is that?

Even though the shopping and attractions will have you enthralled the day is really all about those little bees.

Rooftop beehives are already popping up in major cities around the world. They are now atop landmark buildings including the French National Assembly in Paris and the National Portrait Gallery in London. Rooftop hives are seen as a solution to the impacts of urban sprawl on the world's bee population. The Brickworks Centre has joined this global push to fight declining bee populations and this Saturday unveils its very first batch of signature 'Brickworks' flavoured honey.

Jack Stone, of Bee One Third, installed The Brickworks rooftop hives and regards the initiative as a significant benefit to the local area as a healthy bee population will ensure the diversity and sustainability of plants and crops in a five to seven kilometre radius of the rooftop hives. The Brickworks Centre's hives are home to more than 300,000 bees which means gardens around Southport and Surfers Paradise will experience a complete regeneration through their pollination activities.

Each bee pollinates about 50,000 flowers in its life time meaning over 15 billion flowers will be seeded by bees from these new rooftop hives which are expected to produce around 480kg of honey annually.

The Brickworks Centre honey will have a taste unique to the local area due to the diverse mixtures of nectars and pollens on the Gold Coast. Although distinct, the flavour profile will depend on the season in which it is harvested which provides the perfect excuse for you to keep coming back and checking out the seasonal differences to completely pure, unadulterated, local rooftop honey.

The introduction of the rooftop beehives is in line with The Brickworks Centre's focus on local ownership, high quality produce and healthy living. The rooftop beehives have been installed not only to gift the Gold Coast community with an improved local environment, but to add to the amazing range of gourmet produce and products on offer at The Brickworks Centre.
