Eat Clean – Book Review

Eat Clean is Luke Hines' new cookbook filled with one hundred healthy, feel good recipes. You might remember Luke from his time on My Kitchen Rules, he's a personal trainer and the author of six bestselling cookbooks, so you know you are in good hands.

Eat Clean is loosely based on the paleo or primal way of eating. The book starts with a simple introduction to his philosophy of clean eating. It is followed by a page of tips, tricks and need to knows and then he gives you some advice on the equipment he recommends. There are couple of pages of must-have ingredients with a short description of each. There's only a few you might have trouble sourcing if you don't have a good health food shop near you, like arrowroot flour, avocado oil, coconut flour, coconut butter, coconut syrup, ghee and stevia.

There are chapters on smoothies, shots and elixirs, grab and go breakfasts, weekend breakfasts, baked goods, mains, takeaway alternatives, ideas for celebrations and sweet treats. There's a dedicated page for the majority of the recipes with a beautiful clear illustration of the finished dish.

We cooked the bacon and chorizo meatzza, where you swap the traditional bread base to beef mince. Surprisingly it had all the flavours of an authentic pizza, without the bloat.

There are handy recipes for staples like vanilla almond milk and homemade coconut milk. Savoury dishes which caught my eye included Texas roast chicken with creamy white coleslaw and sweet potato chips, oven baked ribs with spicy barbeque sauce, slow-braised beef cheeks with cauliflower and garlic puree.

Be tempted by recipes for chocolate nut loaf with lemon-macadamia butter, the best banana and raspberry with spiced caramel sauce, dark chocolate lamingtons with blueberry chia jam and tiramisu to die for. Although I'm mostly looking for an excuse to bake the black forest birthday cake with coconut icing.

Luke's written another winning eat clean cookbook.

Eat Clean is available in paperback from your favourite bookseller.
