Nestled in the sweet-sounding suburb of Coconut Grove, is the delicious and soul-satisfying vegetarian café called Martin's.
The food is made fresh daily using local and organic produce where possible and boasts delicious vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. The café bases their menu on 'Ayurveda', the traditional Indian system of medicine based on the idea of balance, and belief that food is nourishment for the body and the soul.
The simplicity of the decor and seating options encourages the fresh and healthy feelings to customers. Outside, there is a lovely courtyard with generous shade from the large, old trees and inside; mismatched tables fill the space. There is a fridge stacked of freshly prepared ready-made meals and a blackboard scribbled with the days menu choices. People from all walks of life including labourers and mums with kids are of the many customers.
I visited this café on a whim whilst on a recent trip to Darwin and tucked into the absolutely divine potato pie with lentils and mashed pumpkin in a vegan crusty case. The pumpkin was fluffy and sweet and the crust was crunchy and soft in all the right places. Never one to stop at feeling full, I couldn't resist ordering the chocolate and chickpea cake and (freshly brewed) hot chai tea. The cake was gluten free and almost fat free and yet so damn moorish!
I left the café (and Darwin) feeling very soul-satisfied indeed!
