There are so many walking trails around Perth and so many that are really worth going to and strolling around. I have picked some of the ones I used to like and most of these are also suitable for seniors, who are no longer as active or as fit as they were.

Over the years, I have been to most of the ones on this list, though nowadays, I am more "sedentary" and just go for a morning walk. I still enjoy a relaxing short walking trail, particularly through our often delightful bushland that we are so fortunate to have here in Western Australia.

[b]1. BOLD PARK - CITY BEACH**
Bold Park is near City Beach and just a short drive from Perth City. We are so lucky to have this park in such close proximity to the suburbs of Floreat and City Beach. You can park in the actual park, and walk from there. It is a 1,080-acre urban bushland area and is located just 8 km directly west of Perth. It has dirt trails where you can walk at your own pace.

On the way, you will see spectacular Flora and this park is managed by the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority.

Bold Park has over 1000 native and non-native species of flora, fauna and fungi which have been identified! Over 300 different local native plants are found within the park boundaries.

Despite its proximity to the city, there is an abundance of wildlife including birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.

You can get brochures of Bold Park and see the trails at this site.

2. BELLS RAPID WALK - SWAN VALLEY
This is an easy 5.5 km round walk through the unique Bell's Rapid trail which passes along the Swan River.

Here you will see great views of Bells Rapids, the rapid waters rushing over majestic boulders in winter, as well as the countryside and coastal plains, with grey kangaroos at certain times of the year.

Flora and Fauna highlights include:
  • Dominant Trees are Wandoo
  • Flooded gums
  • Swamp Paperbark
  • Swamp Sheoak
  • Wildflower – Fuchsia Grevillea
  • Bird – Little Pied Cormorant

  • You can start this walk from Cathedral Avenue, Brigadoon and the round trip will take about 1¼ hours, depending on how fast or how slow you walk!

You can even take your dog along here:

[b]3. JORGENSEN PARK WALK - KALAMUNDA**
This is a 2.7 km walk and will take about an hour. It is a moderate to easy walk as part of it used to be the site of the original Kalamunda Golf Club, which moved to Forrestfield in 1972.

In some places, the walk follows the old fairways, and in part incorporates some of the Bibbulmun Track. Dogs are permitted on the Golf course section only, however, they must be kept on lead unless there is signage saying they can be off lead!

The starting point of this walk is the car park of the Kalamunda Learning Centre and you can leave the car park at Jorgensen Park and go through the treated pine fence and walk in an easterly direction on a well-worn track down the middle of an old fairway.

You can even go on a group walk with the Bibbulmun Track Foundation and details of this are here.

[b]4. BEENYUP SWAMP CIRCUIT - JOONDALUP**
This is one I have not been to, however, it looks interesting and it is an easy and short trail.

It goes through Yellagonga's wetlands which are a haven for wildlife, including resident and migratory birds, swamp tortoises and tiger snakes. The Beenyup Swamp boardwalk and walking trail was established to enable visitors to complete a circuit of Beenyup Swamp, a shallow wetland in the heart of Yellagonga Regional Park, where you can forget for a moment that you are still in suburbia!

Start at the northern entry point to the Park off Woodvale Drive and take the limestone path over the boardwalk amongst flooded gum and freshwater paperbark stands. Continue along the limestone path over the bridge and veer left. Turn left at the shared path and continue along for 800m, where you veer left onto the limestone path and continue back to Woodvale Dr and your starting point.

    [b]5. ALLEN PARK BUSH-LAND - SWANBOURNE**
Allen Park is located in Swanbourne, and comprises of approximately 8 hectares, some 40% of the Park's total area. The whole park is within 1 km of the Ocean and stretches inland from the coastal fore-dunes, through coastal heath and open Tuart-peppermint woodland, to the eastern fringe including jarrah and large marri trees some of which are a hundred years old.

The main landscape feature of the park is Melon Hill, a 40m high dune with magnificent 360° views including Rottnest Island and the city of Perth. This is also a great night walk!

This land is Commonwealth land under management by the Department of Defence.

    [b]6. BLACKBOY RIDGE - CHITTERING**
This is a short walk which takes less than an hour and it is one I did a few years ago, followed by a lovely pie for lunch at the Bindoon Bakehouse!

The hidden walk trail on this reserve is abundant in wildflowers, depending on when you go. You will find wattles, parrot-bush, orchids and it has fantastic views across the valley from the lookout at the top of the trail. It is 1.5 km return and has quite a steep, though gentle slope in places.

Chittering Valley is a lovely interesting place and for this walk, you start from the northern end of the picnic area where you will see a footbridge which crosses a small creek. On the final ascent, the trail passes around the side of the ridge before crossing the summit and leading to a lookout. From here, there are spectacular views across the Chittering Valley.

[b]7. CHANNEL TEN TOWER WALK - LESMURDIE**
This is an easy 5km walk which will take between 45 and 60 minutes.

It is a pleasant, mostly shaded dirt and gravel walk which includes part of the Korung National Park. It meanders through groves of Casaurina, Banksia and Jarrah trees towards the Channel 10 tower.

The trail starts at the end of a dirt track that can be found on Pomeroy Road, 200 metres west of the roundabout intersection with Canning Road.
