Is your New Year resolution to lose weight? Instead of setting a goal to lose a certain number of kilos, or starting a fad diet or "5 week weight loss challenge", why not implement these simple rules in your daily life, and you will see the kilos shed, gain more energy, and feel better. What are you waiting for?

1. Eat Fresh
Limit intake of processed foods. Try to eat 80-90% fresh produce. Attend a raw food workshop to gain innovative and healthy recipe ideas. Reduce your intake of meat, opting for vegetarian choices this is great for reducing your weight, carbon footprint and improving your cardiovascular health.

2. Exercise
There are many easy ways to increase your daily exercise, a few simple and effective solutions include: starting a lunch-time walking group, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, alighting one train stop earlier to walk to your destination, cycling to work, committing to the daily 7 minute workout, and joining the 10,000 step challenge. Thirty minutes a day of exercise is all it takes to maintain a healthy mind and body.

3. Portion Control
There is truth in the saying "your eyes are bigger than your stomachs". Drink a large glass of water with lemon juice before your meal. This will increase your metabolism and partially fill your stomach so you are less likely to overeat. Serve your meals on a small plate, eat with chopsticks, and don't eat in front of the TV. Take time to sit and eat slowly, conversing between mouthfuls, so that your brain has enough time to process that your stomach is full.

4. Drink Water
Cut out sugary drinks, and limit alcohol intake. Opt for water or tea whenever possible. Add freshly squeezed lemon, fresh mint, raspberries, orange slices, or a combination of these, for a refreshing and uplifting taste on water and to increase your metabolism! Adding sparkling mineral water if you can't go without the fizz.

5. De-stress
Cortisol, the stress hormone, slows our metabolism. So chill out, relax, get enough sleep and exercise, and try not to worry too much. Follow these simple ways to keep the calm in your life.
