Eastwood Hotel

We've shared some history… This pub and I. A marathon of memories, a collection of recollections. I've seen her grow over the years, as she has I. And what incredible end results we do both behold! 10 years ago, I celebrated my 21st birthday at the famous Eastwood Hotel. I remember little from that debaucherous weekend, though I do remember a few things. Firstly, an array of scotch whiskey, unmatched by any other bar in Sydney. Secondly, some very liberal opening hours. Thirdly, a restaurant that turned its back on the boring "pub food" menu, in favour of spice, flavour, and satisfaction. A lot of things have changed over these ten long years, but these three trophies have not.

Age delivers some certainties. My writing finesse becomes stronger. My hairline recedes another inch. My taste in scotch becomes ever more expensive. And in amongst all of this, it is comforting to know that some things never change. Kicking the same goals, year after year, Eastwood still remains a favourite hang-out, and looks set to do so for another ten years yet.

What really amazes me about this place is how well it has weathered the storms over the years. You're talking about a suburb which has had an entire cultural makeover, several times. A place in which both McDonald's and KFC failed to swim with the tide, closing their doors years ago, dazed and confused. The changes Eastwood has seen, continues to see, and will see in the future, are too profound, too quick, for most businesses to really understand. Except for Eastwood Hotel.

The bar remains well-stocked. The restaurant is one of the most popular and respected eateries in town - "Jean's Chilli Chicken", with a reputation for the hottest and most flavoursome chicken on offer, is one of the biggest draw cards. Sourcing his chillis all the way from his hometown in Korea, the owner/operator of this restaurant has earned his stripes. Meanwhile, the bars are looked after by a handful of well-rounded, switched-on blokes, who you know are in the industry because of their love for it.

Through their combination of good fortune, good products, and good management, Eastwood Hotel continues to provide a level of awesomeness to its locals, loyals, and legions. And for that, Eastwood Hotel gets the official "Nick Kenny tick of approval".
