Event:
Eco-Friendly Fun For All The Family
One of Perth's most hip suburbs, Subiaco has long been renowned for its trendy boutiques and quirky eateries. However, what many people may not be aware of, is that Subiaco is also home to one of the city's most vibrant community centres and gardens the Earthwise Community. Located in and around an old pink church building on Bagot Road, the Earthwise Community Centre is a hub of activity and creativity throughout the week, hosting an assortment of events, ranging from busy bees in its permaculture gardens and home-cooked meals, to the legendary music jams that are held in the evening of the first Friday of every month. If that is not enough, Earthwise also hosts a low-cost food and grocery centre for those on low incomes, from midday each Thursday, and a wonderful op shop, chock-a-block with all sorts of gorgeous pre-loved goodies.

The Earthwise Community not only embraces the ethos of sustainability but is also firmly committed to educating the public in the many practices and principles encompassed by an eco-friendly urban lifestyle. Coming up on Saturday, October 28th, the Earthwise Open Day is an opportunity for the wider community to take a peek at the wonderful permaculture gardens that have been established at the centre, and to learn a few practical skills that can be taken home and utilised in their own lives. There is something fun for every member of the family, and admission is totally free, making it an affordable outing for all.

An assortment of workshops, relating to recycling and sustainability, are expected to be some of the biggest attractions on the day. These start at 9am with a sauerkraut-making demonstration, followed at 10am by another workshop, showing participants how to make their own kombucha. At 11am, another very special workshop will demonstrate how you can substitute plastic wrapping (as used for food storage and school lunches) with a homemade eco-friendly product that's crafted from bee's wax and recycled fabric. Following this will be a treat for up-cycled art and fashion enthusiasts a workshop showing how to create beautiful beads from old paper. Also scheduled, is a demonstration of how to sew your own produce bag from recycled fabric, and another from The Joy of Wood, showing how to utilise recycled timber in your woodworking projects.

While the workshops mentioned above will take place in the centre's function room, outside in the gardens other learning opportunities will also be taking place. These sustainable gardening demonstrations and workshops will include various topics such as how to compost, the best way to establish a worm farm and how to create a wicking garden bed.

For those who are more interested in shopping than getting their hands dirty, the Open Day will also feature a variety of stalls, purveying all sorts of wares ranging from vegan cosmetics, children's wear, refreshments (including plenty of vegan options), sustainable party supplies (such as biodegradable plates and cutlery) and much, much more.

In addition, the Earthwise Op Shop will also be open on the big day. Situated in the old pink church building, this sweet little op shop must be one of Perth's best-kept secrets and somewhere that Perth's avid op-shopping aficionados really must put on their must-do lists. It's full of all sorts of cool stuff, including books, clothes, bric-a-brac, kitchen wares, baby wear and toys, as well as plenty of other surprises. Best of all, it's very reasonably priced, and all proceeds go straight back into the various projects that Earthwise is involved with.

The market will also contain stalls that are manned by various other environmentally-conscious community groups, including the Western Earth Carers. Naturally, Earthwise will also have a stall on the day where you'll be able to purchase plants, composting worms and worm products, such as their castings and 'juice', both which are invaluable as garden fertiliser.

If you're a family with young children, this event has been created with plenty of things to see and do for even the littlest family members. Many of the workshops will be of interest to children as well as adults, and throughout the day there will be family-friendly entertainment such as local buskers, face painters, the wonderful Eco Faeries and unique Junkadelic Pure Junk Band. In addition to their unique brand of music inspired by traditional New Orleans street music Junkadelic will also present a workshop during which participants, young and old, can create their own up-cycled instrument, utilising miscellaneous bits and pieces.

Taking place in one of Perth's most dynamic locales, this community fair aims to demonstrate the many ways that we can all live in a more eco-friendly way by reusing and recycling our natural resources. With a focus on sustainability, the arts and good old-fashioned community values, Earthwise is an uplifting oasis amidst the noise and chaos of suburbia, and this upcoming event is certain to showcase all that it has to offer.
