Calling all CEOS, presidents, wannabe presidents, moms, dads, children and anyone who receives electricity bills to "Switch Off" this Saturday. Join hands in a global effort from the comfort of your own home to create awareness about climate change with Earth Hour. All you need to do is punch out your lights from 8:30pm to 9:30pm to help save and converse energy and to show your support.
Earth Hour was first conceptualised and launched in Sydney in 2007, showing that everybody, irrespective of their job title or age had the power to make a difference in the world they live in. In support of this cause, more than 2000 businesses and 2.2 million households turned off their lights that year.
In 2008, Canada and the city of Toronto signed up to be part of this effort making it a global campaign, which is now backed up by more than 135 countries. Over a course of five years, many have come together in this effort to contain the issues faced by our planet today by simply switching off their lights for sixty minutes.
Scheduled on the last Saturday of March every year, the event closely collides with the equinox, to ensure most cities are in darkness while the earth revolves around the sun.
