This brilliant initiative started in Sydney in 2007. The idea was to turn our lights off for one hour, maximizing our support for climate change initiatives. Over 2 million people and 2000 businesses joined in the inaugural event to signal care for our environment. The Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House sails and the Luna Park face were all turned off during this time.

Consequently in 2008 the city of Toronto, Canada joined in. Then later icons such as the Pyramids at Giza, one of New York's famous billboards in Time Square and the Coliseum in Rome all dowsed their lights in support of this undertaking. The movement has grown to over 6950 cities and 152 countries. According to the website Earth Hour has become the largest global movement for the environment.

Earth Hour is a concept that came about through the World Wide Fund for Nature, enabling us to lend a hand in helping our world. On March 23, 2013 no matter where you are you will have the ability to join this growing movement and turn off your lights for an hour. Check the Earth Hour website near you for your local time to turn off. Here in Australia it will be 8:30pm.

If you want to take it even further this year they are asking folks to think about sustainable energy and moving in that direction. Again, more information is available on the website at www.earthhour.org.au .

What a great time to get the kids together and play board games by lantern light. How about a romantic dinner by candle light? A family party in the backyard or a group get together can be a lot of fun: tiki torches and a barbeque perhaps? This is a great time to use your imagination and at the same time teach your children and your friends that such little effort can have great impact. Let them know they are part of a growing historical movement.

The WWF hosted website has space for those of you who want to share group hosted events. If you are not so inclined there are a number of events including outdoor acoustic concerts and candle-lit picnics to name a few. If you are a teacher there are resource packs to be had. The website contains a map of events that will be going on as well as other valuable information.

When we first participated in Earth Hour 5 years ago with our kids we thought it would be so exciting to see how things went in our neighbourhood. It was fun hanging out on the veranda by candle light. However, we were disappointed at the lack of participation in our neigbourhood. It would be great to see more people get involved.

Join the rest of the world with little effort. We have the power to turn off for an Earth Hour.
