Melbourne Recital Centre 's Ears Wide Open series is over for 2016. Very sad face. I don't know if you know about
Richard Gill and how lucky we are to have him in this country but you can read about it
here if you're not already sick of me banging on about it.
Ears Wide Open 3 showcased four movements from
Haydn's Drumroll Symphony as a taster for what's to come in September in the
Beethoven and Beyond Piano Concerto No. 4 performance at Hamer Hall. The great thing about reviewing Richard Gill is that the man just about writes the review himself. Here's what he had to say about Haydn's Drumroll Symphony: 'Commentators say this piece is monothematic. I beg to differ. But it's a free world and they're entitled to be wrong.'
He advised his rapt audience that the first performance of this symphony earned an encore for its second movement. 'In those days you could clap between movements and these days you can't. It's crackers!'
As if we weren't going to applaud between movements after that! And well done that man for saying out loud what we've all been thinking. Bring back the sporadic applause and hang the consequences.
Gill spent the next hour or so conducting a pared down version of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, smiling broadly over his shoulder every so often at the audience with the sheer joy of it. He is a delight and so is the music. The symphony in its entirety will be performed by the MSO and conducted by Douglas Boyd at Hamer Hall on September 14, along with Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto and Schoenberg's Transfigured Night.
'These composers were at the height of their powers and they just got better and better and better,' he told us. 'So you would be insane not to go to that concert.'
We're going Richard. We're going! Any final words of wisdom? 'Melbourne must never take for granted this extraordinary group of musicians.'
Or the man who so inspires them. We are truly blessed to have Richard Gill in our midst. Catch him while you can. And don't miss the MSO in full flight on September 14 at Hamer Hall.
