I am unashamedly a fan of burlesque - that oh-so-inappropriate form of entertainment that delights in being over the top, and in ensuring members of the audience (whether individually or collectively) experience the occasional uncomfortable moment.

The word 'burlesque' has Italian origins, deriving from a word that means a joke, ridicule or mockery. So, while it can be 'in your face' (sometimes literally!) theatre, it is always good fun and laughs are guaranteed.

And so it was with this show, with a series of acts ranging from striptease to hula hoops to sweet singing. The show is compered by the very professional and appealing Miss Adelaide Everheart . Miss Everheart was the glue for this show, and her clever banter and one liners were effective in keeping the continuity between acts.

The lineup changes from show to show, and the artists in the show I saw each had two acts. Featured in the show were the slightly ditzy vaudevillian Clara Cupcakes , the larger than life Cherry Lush (always keen to get her gear off!), the delightful Minnie Andrews (who entertained us with her soulful singing), and Becky Lou (equally keen to get her gear off!).

What I particularly liked was seeing this show in the Butterfly Club (located in Carson Place, off Little Collins Street, Melbourne). The Butterfly Club's small theatre format creates challenges for cast and audience alike; the former in the sense that stage management is critical and the latter in so far as the audience is literally at arm's length from the performers. But Early Burly Burlesque worked well in this venue. An advantage of the audience being so accessible is that it's easy to have audience participation. There was a limited amount of audience participation in this show, but what was there was hilarious. (It always is, as long as it's someone else!).

I found myself chuckling throughout this performance, with regular laugh out loud moments. Lasting just over an hour, it is a thoroughly entertaining show. If you like burlesque, you'll enjoy this show.

Miss Everheart is hosting monthly burlesque shows at the Butterfly Club. The next performance is scheduled for Friday 31st July 2015. For more information and to buy tickets, go to the Butterfly Club's website .
