E for Ethel is a gorgeous new café and gift shop tucked away just off Melbourne Street, North Adelaide. Started in September 2011 by Amanda Matulick and Dan Harland, E for Ethel is warm, bright, and a stand out amongst its Melbourne Street rivals.

A cosy little abode, its walls are filled with delightful handmade, sustainable, Australian gifts. But far from a tacky, cluttered shop as these places can sometimes be, E for Ethel is full of beautiful modern art pieces and gift cards. Here you will find the perfect present for someone special or a new acquaintance's birthday.

A simple selection of scrumptious food is on offer, from croissants and toasties to banana bread and scones. All their goodies fall within an accessible $4-6.00 price range. They use locally roasted De Groot Coffee Company coffee and are proud of its fairtrade certification. This means not only will you enjoy a tasty high quality cuppa, but you can drink guilt-free knowing you are supporting local people as well as developing world producers. I am not a big tea drinker myself, but even I was tempted to try their incredible selection of herbal teas after hearing a rave review from a fellow customer. Smoothies, juices, and more drinks are also on offer.

As I entered the small shop I was immediately taken by the glow left by soft lighting and lamps, and the bright colours from the gifts and decorations. The shop is fitted out with retro tables and chairs and completed with a large wooden counter. A huge number of board games and a kids' corner with toys and drawing table complete the homely experience. The diverse selection of music is the perfect backdrop for a casual conversation, game, or browse around the shop – automatically lifting one's mood.

As all consumers know, the most beautiful place can be let down by bad customer service. Rest assured, you'll find nothing but a warm smile, friendly chatter and engaging service by the charming couple that run this store.

So, next time you're meeting friends for coffee, want a tea-break from life, are looking for a winter warmer or the perfect present for a friend – make sure you pop into E for Ethel – I guarantee you'll be delighted.
