Peer in...to the 'Room with a View'.

I have just received my invitation to Dylan's new exhibition at Jan Manton Gallery entitled 'Room with a View'. I met Dylan a number of years back as he was painting on Ithaka Creek and I have been following his progress, growth and development as an artist ever since.





His latest work is a complete departure from what he painted before. I remember his last exhibition as being full of interesting footwear. Not a single pair in sight for this one though!



He has also changed the medium in which he is working from oils to gouache and for those unfamiliar with the medium, it is a thicker type of watercolour.

Gouache is more opaque than watercolour. When a layer of watercolour is applied, the white paper and any preliminary drawings underneath will show through, whereas when a layer of gouache is applied, the paper will not show through nearly as much.

Gouache combines the exciting characteristics of watercolour and acrylic paints, creating a luminous look. This medium is beloved for its vibrant results, which dries quickly with a matte finish that won't reflect light.

Gouache paint is mixed with water, similar to watercolour. If you are interested in this medium, the artist will actually be talking about his new art forms and his methods and for details and dates - see below.

Jones states: "%%As an artist, I believe it is important to push towards a new challenge rather than staying static. With this in mind, during early 2021 I deliberately placed myself amongst the iconic landscape of Sydney Harbour. An environment I previously would have deemed too beautiful to paint.

Throughout time, artists have been drawn to this site as a source of inspiration. Masters such as Arthur Streeton, Margaret Preston and Brett Whiteley all depicted their unique vision and response to this place and revealed the harbour with a certain unimaginable brilliance. 'Room with a View' offers a fresh take on the subject and allows me to make my own mark on this lineage. Each work portrays the harbour in a more humble light, granting me the tranquillity to digest the environment's overwhelming beauty on my own terms.

Instead of seeking out the conventional 'postcard vistas' we are accustomed to seeing, I positioned my entire focus through the east-facing window of my accommodation when painting each work. The physical act of distancing myself from the landscape allowed my viewpoint to become less site specific. I was able to respond to the immediacy of my surroundings in order to reimagine structures and scenes of the every day in a new, ubiquitous setting. The paintings do not settle on an exact moment in time, but instead, have an ephemeral quality. The approach is one of subtlety and softness, inviting the viewer to lull in each spacious composition%%".

Due to the precariousness of event scheduling in light of Australia's recent Covid-19 outbreak, 'Room with a View' will not have a traditional opening. Instead, those interested can go to the gallery during the session times below to meet the artist and take an informal tour of the exhibition space.
