Over a recent weekend, friends and I camped at Bjelke-Petersen Dam and visited a couple of wineries nearby. I was quite surprised to see how many wineries there are situated in the South Burnett , yet wonderful to see just how well they are patronised.

The Bjelke-Petersen Dam camp area has powered, unpowered and cabins on site as well as a good size pool, excellent camp kitchens and private and public toilets and showers. The camping ground was certainly packed that weekend, which coincided with the Australia Day Holiday and the Friday, which most people opted to take as a holiday as well. Families, pets, couples, travellers and groups loved the sunny weekend where most headed for the dam with jet skis, boats, canoes and other water activities.

For my unpowered campsite, I paid $15.00 a night per person, however, depending on the number of nights you stay, the price may decrease. Approximately three minutes from Bjelke-Petersen Dam Camp Site is Dusty Hill Village at Moffatdale and where we would be spending the Saturday evening at an Australia Day Celebration under the stars with fantastic live music, dancing and plenty of food to consume. The event " Prawn on the Lawn " was hosted by owners Joe & Miranda Prendergast and the night was so enjoyable that I will certainly be keeping an eye on their website for more great events coming in 2023.

The meal started with tables of bread and condiments, cheeses, pastes and relishes followed by drums of fleshy King Prawns and hot finger foods. Anyone with dietary requirements could order from the menu and receive a plated meal. No one could say they left feeling hungry as the food was plentiful and very moreish.

If you wish to stay at Dusty Hill Village, there is accommodation in boutique style cabins/cottages, which can sleep up to six persons. You can book through the website where photographs will show you the beauty of the accommodation provided. You may wish to stay in the first home to be erected at Dusty Hill, which was built by Frank Prendergast for his wife Margaretha and is perched on top of the hill overlooking the vineyard and Lake Barambah. This cottage is fully self-contained and sleeps two couples or up to six people.

Dusty Hill is like a small village of surprises with a function centre, an Irish Hotel and Restaurant, wine tasting and is also available for weddings and conferences . A small Chapel is on the grounds for a perfect wedding setting and a pool set in a private location for guests looked inviting on a warm summer afternoon. With more construction underway, Joe advised that the conference centre will be able to cater up to 600 people.

Wine tasting is available from Thursday to Sundays commencing at 11.00am through to 4.00pm. All grapes are grown on site and produced by Dusty Hill's resident winemaker. During the tasting sessions, you will be able to try a variety of wines, some styles that are not usually available, yet exquisite in their taste and the winemaker and his knowledgeable team will be able to answer your questions.

The Chef & Winemakers Pantry offers products from local artisans and fresh produce from growers. There are also hand-poured soy candles, local jams and relishes, olive oil, table olives, small goods, local cheeses and if you have a sweet tooth, you may like to try the Dusty Hill Fudge Tasting. There are several flavours to choose from and purchase to take home.

While there, pop into Prendergast's Boutique Bottle Shop , which houses craft beers and spirits that have been sourced locally and internationally. If you are into Bundaberg Rum, you will be happy to find a large range of Bundaberg Rum Collector Editions for sale.

Dusty Hill Vineyard is located at 80 Waterview Drive, Moffatdale in the South Burnett Region.
