Located along Currie Street, (known commonly as The Duke) is an iconic heritage listed hotel that serves a good variety of pub food. At the moment, $10 can get you one of these hearty meals at The Duke – Fish & Chips or Beef/Chicken Schnitzel with Chips & Salad on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays; or Burger & Fries on Thursdays. We went there on a Tuesday night to try their Fish & Chips and Chicken Schnitzel. Unfortunately their fish were all sold out so we ended up ordering Mushroom Burger, Pulled Pork Burger, Chicken Schnitzel with Mushroom Sauce and Sweet Potato Fries.

Their Mushroom Burger is quite unique - instead of using a large mushroom as the main filling, it uses a mixture of Oyster, King Brown and Enoki mushrooms. All the mushrooms were cooked just right with the slightly sweet taste of the pumpkin complementing the earthy taste of the mushrooms well. The fries that came with the burger were crisp with fluffy interiors with just the right amount of seasoning.



My father loved pulled pork and could not resist ordering their Pulled Pork Burger. The burger had tender, juicy pork with a delectable smoky flavour. It also included apple slaw which added a bit of crunch to the burger with its refreshing taste balancing out the taste of the pork. While it normally comes with cheese, my father had his without it.



As expected, their Chicken Schnitzel was well done with the crisp coating contrasting well with the tender meat. The mushroom sauce we chose to accompany the schnitzel was a good partner to it with a taste that was not too creamy and the refreshing salad rounded up the dish. Other choices for the sauce are gravy, pepper sauce and Diane sauce.



Even though all the meals came with generous serves of fries, we also ordered their Sweet Potato Fries to have a taste. The portion was very generous and like their regular fries the Sweet Potato Fries were fried to golden brown with fluffy interiors. The fries were fried to perfection so you can still taste the sweetness of the sweet potatoes. It came with an aioli dip to complement the flavour but my mother preferred the fries as it is.



The hotel had a lovely rustic ambience with wooden tables and seats and posters on the wall. Outdoor seatings are also available in the Craft Beer Garden area, which The Duke claims to be the largest in the CBD and had a number of award winning craft beers on tap. The beer garden sounds like a great place to unwind after a working week because there is also live music every Thursday and Friday after working hours.
