I woke up one Saturday wanting something different: something eclectic, funky, inviting. I got that in both the food and the atmosphere at Duende, and more. This is a little (not so hidden) gem right in the guts of Leederville, offering tapas-style dishes with a wine list to boot. I've been a longtime fan of the establishment, often dining at night and indulging in their array of Spanish-influenced dishes and top notch service. I had been for breakfast once before, when they first started offering it, and was underwhelmed, but I knew I had to give them another chance.

We went for breakfast this time, so we were leaning more towards non-alcoholic liquids, and settled for a freshly pressed strawberry juice and a flat white. The juice was sweet, albeit lovely, and served in a cute bottle. The coffee was divine, with the bitterness of the bean rounded out nicely with sweet, cloudy milk. Not long after the waitress took our drinks order, she was right back to take our food order; great timing, as we were famished.

We ordered the fruit toast, which was not your run-of-the-mill, airy fruit toast but a beautifully dense and chewy loaf, served with butter and raspberry conserve. My 2 year old gobbled it up, without delay. I ordered the leek and jamon croqueta, served with a poached egg and gorgonzola aioli. This dish is not for the faint hearted; its rich, full of flavour and will keep you going well into lunchtime. The aioli was the star of the show with its strong cheesy tang, and the croqueta crisp and bursting with chunks of jamon.

My friends opted for something lighter, with one ordering the fruit salad macerated in orange and cherry, served with yogurt. This was a simple fruit salad, with good quality, thick Greek yoghurt and a scattering of berries atop.

My other friend chose the avocado, tomato and feta atop sourdough bread with basil oil. The serving was rather large, and she couldn't finish it all, yet she thoroughly enjoyed it.

Their prices are really reasonable, and along with the service and quality of the food, I am glad I gave this place another chance at making me a stunning breakfast. They don't take bookings, so try get there early to avoid waiting with a rumbling tummy. Their day starts at 7.30am, so rise with the early bird and get the worm. Give this place a go, you won't be disappointed!
