Dubbo Zoo

It had been on my bucket list for years! We have passed through Dubbo on our way to family visits in Melbourne or Adelaide on many occasions, and there was no time to stop and enjoy some of the sights along the way.
We often said that we would one day visit the
, and after many years I had the opportunity to visit! I had heard that one could ride a bike around the zoo – so I had packed my fold up e-bike into the boot of my car and it was with excitement that I unfolded it, donned my backpack and helmet and set off for my adventure.
I had booked online (discounts apply if you do this), and my check-in was quick. I was given a map with information and set off, following some other bike riders initially.
The Zoo is well organised and the animals are not in cages, as perhaps one might imagine, but cleverly confined to their particular areas.
Other options for getting around the Zoo include walking (it's a long walk so best for the very fit), bicycles (bring your own or hire one at the Zoo), drive your own car (there's plenty of parking spots to stop and walk around), or hire a cart at the Zoo. Details of hiring etc
here .
There's quite a program of tours and talks around the Zoo. Details are
here.
There are a number of accommodation options at the Zoo, but I stayed in town for a few days.
At the Reception Building where one can purchase tickets, or if pre-purchased you will need to register, there is also a great café and a delightful shop tp purchase souvenirs. In front of the café is a lake with visiting birds and on the small island are monkeys to entertain. A great place to wind down, or rest between treks into the Zoo.
It is open 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year, including Christmas Day!! See the website for details about prices.
So next time you pass through Dubbo, make a plan to stop for at least one day and/or night at the Zoo and see what they have to offer. It is well worth a visit!
