Knitting, a competitive sport in its own right
The cooler weather seems to heighten the level of competitive sport around Brisbane, don't you think? Football fields and school ovals across the metropolis seem to be hosting all manner of team sports and ball games. Spectators too, are getting competitive. In residences right across the city there is a lot of cursing and thought provoking suggestions being handed out to referees from the lounge room critics watching Rugby League on the telly, and generally not of the kind that can be repeated here.

Well, the more genteel citizens of Brisbane, here is an opportunity for you to put your best competition smile in place, and have fun at the same time.

On Saturday, the 15th of July, the Centenary Crochet and Knitting Circle, are hosting a Challenge to see who has the quickest knitting needles in town!

Colour and Warmth - what could be better?

This Drop In and Knit Day aims to knit over 500 squares in 8 hours, with the squares then being sewn together to create blankets for the needy for winter.

These blankets will then be donated to:
Foster children through "Life Without Barriers"
Homeless people through "Motorcycle Night Feed"
Mothers moving from hostels to new homes through "Giving Grannies".

This free charity event will commence at 9am at the Westside Church of Christ, 11 Intrepid Street, Jamboree Heights. You can drop in for an hour, or even the whole day, when doors close at 5pm.

This WILL be a fun day with complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits, as well as a free BBQ lunch from 11am till 1pm.

As well there will be hourly raffles, an exhibition of crochet and knitted items, and the real challenge - who can knit the fastest square?

For those who would like to polish their skills before the actual event and wish to commence timing themselves, the group knit squares which are 15cm by 15cms on a 4mm needle and cast on 30 stitches with a garter stitch.

There will be limited needles and wool on the day so if you can, please take your own instruments and 8 ply wool. And take along a friend too - this has all the makings of a truly sociable day, and all for a good cause! There will be no arguments with refs either - what a bonus!
