Looking for a night out where you can see other people but not really, spend the bulk of the night lying down, and stay in your comfy pants? Read on for New South Wales list of drive-in movie theatres.

Heddon Greta Drive-In

Heddon Greta Drive-In was opened in December 1967 with a mission to provide family-friendly entertainment at an affordable price. Decades later, they're still at it.

Located in Heddon Greta, about 30 kilometres inland from Newcastle, the drive-in plays new release movies on Friday and Saturday nights. Admission is $30 per carload, which can include up to eight people, and tickets must be purchased online. You can view the selection of movies and purchase tickets on their website . Please note: their homepage features flashing lights that some might find disorienting.

Sound is offered through FM radio and owners recommend using a portable radio instead of your car radio.

If you'd like some nosh while you watch, Heddon Greta Drive-In has an onsite restaurant. They are currently takeaway only and prefer EFTPOS payments.

Skyline Drive-In

As the oldest continuously running drive-in theatre in New South Wales, Skyline Drive-In know the importance of reinventing themselves to stay relevant. Funnily enough, their most recent re-brand takes up back to the early days of the Skyline, when Happy Days and malted milkshakes were all that mattered.

Playing mostly new release movies, with the occasional classic or double feature, Skyline Drive-In is possible the most polished on this list. Admission is $35 per car for up to 6 people.

For food options, a candy bar offering a limited selection of snacks will be available. Due to COVID-19, owners recommend using contactless EFTPOS for food and ticket purchases.

WestView Drive-In

Located in Dubbo, WestView Drive-In is a picturesque twilight experience.

Every weekend, WestView plays classic movies like Aladdin in three sessions every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. Gates open at 6pm for a 7pm start. They also run special event screenings like State of Origin.

Entry is $40 per car for up to 7 people and must be purchased online. The entry fee gives you a space for your car as well as the space around your car, so feel free to bring bean bags or chairs.

WestView also recommends use of a portable radio for sound.
