Draw it. Code it. Summer Holiday Program @ QUT



The Cube and QUT Art Museum have joined together to create a fantastic program for kids over the 2017/2018 summer holidays. Open from 6-14 January 2017, daily from 10am to 4pm, the program offers a fantastic opportunity for kids to try out some basic coding and art, play and have fun. Escape the heat and come into the Cube to see what's on offer.



The Cube's screens will be featuring Code-A-Bot , a game where children can customise and program virtual robots that collect and recycle rubbish. Code-A-Bot is great fun for kids aged 8 and up, though children under 12 must be supervised by an adult. Code Coach sessions will be held in January, in which a coach will help children learn some basing coding concepts, as well as how to customise the robots and set up simple commands for them.



They can also guide Sphero SPRK robots through an obstacle course using a tablet to steer. SPRK are little ball shaped robots that can run up ramps, dodge across a seesaw and navigate around a maze and the user can change the colour of the lights on the robot. The Spheros are simpler to control, making them suitable for younger children (aged 5 and up).

The Maker Space is also suitable for kids aged 5 and up. Creative kids can try out Makey Makey, a kit which allows users to connect everyday objects with computer programs, and Little Bits, which are electronic building blocks, like Lego only you can use them to make simple circuits. There are colouring sheets and a competition to design a character, with the grand prize of a BB8 Sphero robot, as seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Arty kids will love the QUT Art Museum's Shadow Puppet activity zone, where they can make their own shadow puppets and try them out, and the Portray Zone, where visitors can view artist Hendrik Kerstens' series of photos of daughter Paula in the style of the Dutch masters, but using everyday modern objects including a plastic bag and lampshade, and dress up and take pictures themselves.



Upstairs, the Retro Arcade is open from 10am to 4pm for ages 5 and up. It features retro 80's style games on a large touch screen. There are cooperative multi-player games such as the ice hockey game, Mighty Pucks, and Block Breakers, and also the competitive games Parabola Pirates, Track Stars, and Space Junk. These games demonstrate mathematical concepts at the same time as being heaps of fun to play.

Draw it, Code it is educational, fun, and free, making it a great way to keep children occupied and happy during the school holidays.
