Some have said it's French inspired, some say it's a little piece of Melbourne on Victoria Square. I say that's like claiming one of your friends looks like someone famous, sometimes annoying and always a generalisation.

Dragonfly is indicative of what has been happening in Adelaide for a few years now and the places popping up that are original and passionately inspired have a style that is definitely Adelaide. So many people still don't know where it is or how good it is I think this is because the regulars like it so much they are probably trying to keep it under their hats.

This place is a love story. The owners manage every aspect of the bar and have made a commercially successful venture out their idea of an ideal place to spend a Saturday night. Two couples with high standards and good taste have styled every part of Dragonfly until there is nowhere else quite like it in Adelaide.

The décor is either homemade or hand picked and it gives the place an after show burlesque feel. You can imagine an off duty mime, still in his make up crying into a cabaret dancers ample bosom while clutching a dark ale in his pale hand. Even the bathrooms are awesome.

The lighting and furniture adds softness to the atmosphere, which makes it the perfect place for a date or dinner with friends on a quiet night. It is a lacy cocoon inside which secrets are whispered and kisses are stolen.

If you want to be really impressed or impressive go there for dinner and cocktails before the DJs start. The food is designed by the owner/chef and is a delightful mix of cultures, which shows off the culinary skill of the kitchen in a simple and elegant way. The salt and pepper tofu and charming bowls of edamame rival any you will find in Chinatown and the chefs specials show a love for fresh, seasonal produce and a respect for well cooked meat. Everything about this place is so well thought out it seems almost effortless. No matter how many times I order a favourite, it is always of the same high quality.

The cocktails are also house originals and lovely, unpretentious names like Mad Hatters Tea (real tea included with a hint of crazy) Candy Apple Martini and Fuzzy Tingle Times which is great to try and watch someone order when they are happily slurring their words.

Above and beyond all this hospitality greatness it seems that the staff here actually understand the meaning of the word hospitable. They are gracious hosts who are always buoyant and well dressed. Their personalities carry the night through into an experience that is enjoyed by all, as bad eggs are not tolerated to ruin it for the other guests. Their obvious pride and respect for their work place adds another dimension to an already outstanding venue. I believe happy staff means fantastic management.

The owners of Dragonfly do not stop there however as one of their great loves is music. And how's this for an eye opener, the DJ's get to play what they want! There is no restrictions put on them to play to please the audience, this results in a place where DJ's and producers come to hang out and where most of the crowd really appreciate their tunes.

Dragonfly is supportive of local talent not only in DJs but in artists as well. With a different exhibition every month and shows during most festivals this place taps into the exciting and new in Adelaide as well as celebrating the tried and true. The testament to how much others love this place is the ledge above the bar, it is full of a collection of toys, gifts and versions of Dragonflies from all over the world that patrons bring back as tokens of amore. It is the kind of place you compare other places to, the kind of place you think about when you are somewhere else, it's world class.
