On Monday 5th August at 4AM Melbourne Australia time, the BBC broadcast the revelation of the actor who would play the 12th incarnation of Doctor Who.

It was due to the simultaneous world-wide live broadcast that we Australians got such an inconvenient time slot, but many of the die-hard fans (and yes, I include myself in this category) made the effort to be awake for the big reveal.

The revelation came after about 20 minutes of build-up time in which host, Zoe Ball interviewed fans, and old cast members. There was also an exclusive video interview played throughout with the much-loved 11th Doctor actor, Matt Smith which provoked an emotional response from all.

When the time came, the suspense was high and it was then that Ball announced that it was Scottish actor, film director, and screenwriter, Peter Capaldi that had received the coveted role of the new Doctor.

Capaldi is a well known and much loved actor, as well as a long time Doctor Who fan; all of the ingredients for a brilliant choice of actor to portray the Doctor.

The regeneration will occur at the end of this year's Doctor Who Christmas special which traditionally airs on Boxing Day in Australia.
