What child does not simply love Dr Seuss? I cannot name any - why some of the stories even appeal to adults - they are so cleverly written and interesting and can keep children amused for hours.

Now [i]The Cat in the Hat[/i] will be appearing live on stage. It will be on for two sessions (10.30 am and 5.00 pm) on Thursday 4th July 2019. The venue will be the Redland Performing Arts Centre, 2 -16 Middle Street, Cleveland.

The story is about two bored children and one crazy cat who is wearing a red-striped hat. More than 50 years after it was written, [i]The Cat in the Hat[/i] remains a much-loved children's book. It has now been transformed into a crazy, imaginative play.

[i]The Cat in the Hat[/i] interrupts a rainy afternoon with an unexpected visit to Sally and her brother. Their outspoken pet fish is amazed and concerned but this cat will not be deterred. He will teach us all to make our own fun with nothing else except a little imagination. Along with Thing One and Thing Two, this cat will show her mischievous humour and madcap style that will be loved by the whole family.



This play is suitable for ages 3 to 10 years old and their parents and grandparents.

[b]About [i]Cat in the Hat[/i][/b]
Dr Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Geisel, was working as a children's book author and illustrator. A popular book for young children involved the story of two children named Dick and Jane. The problem was that Dick and Jane were rather boring and educators and parents knew it. So, as a result, these boring characters thwarted children from learning how to read and advance their skill level.

William Spaulding, the director of Houghton Mifflin's education division decided to invite Dr Seuss over for dinner and asked him to create an exciting children's book. He wanted this to encourage them to read. He asked Dr Seuss to [i]"Write me a story that first-graders can't put down!"[/i]

Dr Seuss thought, [i]"no sweat."[/i] But in fact, he did sweat for about a year and a half! Accustomed to inventing words at his leisure in his previous books, the imaginative author underestimated how hard it would be to limit his vocabulary to around 200 words. In the end, he managed to keep his masterpiece, [i]The Cat in the Hat[/i], down to 236 words.

But conceiving the story was difficult for Dr Seuss. With the word list being so limited, he finally chose the first two words he could find that rhymed. He then decided to create a story around them. Cat and hat are what he found!

Dr Seuss thought about his story as two children who are stuck at home alone on a rainy day. An anthropomorphized cat turns up with two strange companions at their door. They then wreak havoc while the children's goldfish warns them about these bad characters.



In the end, the cat uses a machine to clean up his dreadful mess, all before mum gets home.

It was then published in 1957 and [i] The Cat in the Hat[/i] was an instant success. It made Dr Seuss a world-renowned children's book author. It also led to the beginning of Beginner Books, a publishing house that produced books similar to [i]The Cat in the Hat[/i] to help children learn how to read.
