Dr. Mary Booth Lookout Reserve

QUICK READ: Secluded area to view the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House, peaceful and quiet, access by walking on Dr. Mary Booth Reserve Foreshore Walkway.

You'd think since Sydney is such a populated city that all locations and sites are to be known by now. Well, since decisively becoming a 'local tourist', I've come to realise that Sydney is full of secret lookouts in all aspects of culture. Whether it is a new cafe featuring a unique menu, an art gallery showcasing eccentric work or cool graffiti found in a laneway, there will always be a location in Sydney waiting to be discovered.

As the name of the lookout suggests, it is named after Dr. Mary Booth. Dr. Mary Booth was involved in the medical and public welfare sector, particularly focusing on children, women and servicemen. The existence of this lookout came to be when its surrounding area was in plan of being redeveloped for flats; the land was once part of 'The Dingle' estate where Dr. Booth lived close by. She advocated for the foreshore reservation to be set aside and with the support of groups such as the Tree-Lovers' League of Kuring-gai, the National Trust and the Anzac Fellowship, this lookout and its surrounding areas were thus preserved for posterity.

I discovered this site whilst researching another on Google Maps and I spotted this location. So, I set my foot out on a sunny day and took off to find this location as the images from Google promised me great views.

The walkway is separated into two metal boardwalk sections which are linked by sandstone seating areas, enabling viewers to observe beyond Sydney's harbour. The boardwalk is wide enough for two people to walk together, however, it is indeed quite spacious for one person. The greenery on both sides of the boardwalk provides a habitat for fauna and birds as native shrubs and groundcovers have been planted to sustain the environment.

As the location is a lookout, there were stairs and slopes leading to the site and luckily enough, there weren't too many. Once I reached the lookout, the area opened to the view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge on the right, and the Sydney Opera House to the left. There was no one else besides myself, the grass, vegetation, three lonely seating areas and two of Sydney's most iconic sites; the area was secluded to my disbelief.

This has to be one of Sydney's best secluded lookouts featuring the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was tranquil and silent, perfect for some 'me' time or to be enjoyed with a loved one. In some areas of the lookout, views of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House can be blocked by the growing greenery. This is easily solved by walking to a different vantage point.

The boardwalk and the lookout can be reached by taking the train (the nearest train station is Milsons Point Station) and walking. Alternatively, catching the bus from Alfred St, Milsons Point Station and then walking to the locations is also possible. Walking from Milsons Point Station takes approximately 11 minutes and catching the bus with walking will be around 9 minutes.

This short stroll and visit to the lookout was definitely one of my favourite and easily accessible locations in Sydney. With the waves so close to the walk and the elevated height of the lookout, it is terrific for relaxation. If you're searching for a secluded place in Sydney with great views, this is your new spot!

ALTERNATIVES: Check out Bradfield Park (Park under the north side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge) for close ups of its design.

TIPS: Don't stand too close to the sandstone seating areas, wear sunscreen and opt for comfortable shoes.
