In Sydney it's not easy to find a good outlet for organic, raw, cruelty free, and vegan products. So it's great to find a store that has a wide range of these. Dr Earth is located on Newtown's King street, just a short walk from the train station.
The store is a mecca for more conscious products. In Inner Sydney, it is the best store of it's type that I have found, and I was delighted by the range. The shop is an inviting maze of well-stocked shelves and self-serve stations that allow you to buy only what you need of a number of top quality products - many of which are difficult to find elsewhere.
One of the more novel features of Dr Earth is the peanut butter-making station, where you can create your own peanut butter. There are also dispensers for unhulled organic tahini, organic olive oil and you can grind your own coffee. There is also a self-service urn at the front of the store, that holds the soup of the day.
The range of bulk dry goods includes lentils, beans, grains and some less common items like cacao nibs. The store has the largest range of spices and spice mixes that I have seen, with a whole rack dedicated to organic spices alone. There is a selection of vegan mock meat and vegan cheeses as well, which makes the site a great spot for those following a vegan lifestyle.
If you are looking for fresh fruits and vegetables, there is a little cool room that has organic produce. If you are bored of supermarket variety confectionery they stock a lot of unusual chocolate varieties, many of which are fair trade or organic. They have a range of quality dried fruit and healthier snacks too.
This shop is definitely the place to come if you are planning to switch to toiletries that are more natural or have less chemicals and harmful ingredients in them. They have a wide range of 'friendly' cosmetics, skin care and hair care products.
Exploring the aisles you will discover some unusual items such as antibacterial and anti-fungal bamboo eco-underwear, safer cookware and a surprisingly varied range of salt substitutes for people trying to reduce their sodium intake.
