On the North Side of Brisbane people usually focus on the more famous cycle paths such as Kedron Brook and the Boondall Wetlands, however just behind the Westfield in Chermside is a delightful little cycle path that goes about 10 km from Virginia Station through to Raven Street Reserve. This track mostly goes through park and bush land, though you do have to cross a few roads and cycle short way beside a busy road.
There are three starting points to cycle this path. You can park at the Raven Street Reserve off Rode Road (always referred to by locals as Rodey Road). I would recommend that you start at Virginia Station at the other end, as this part of the track is flat until you cross Gympie Road and start to head up to the Raven Street Reserve. It makes the return journey more pleasant. You can also park at the Westfield in Chermside at around the half way point on the cycle path.
While I was living in Chermside I would usually do the path from Chermside to Raven Street Reserve. The last part of the track takes you up a fairly steep incline within the bushland reserve, giving you a decent workout followed by being able to coast half the way home afterwards. Don't worry, the cycle path in the Raven Street Reserve bushland area is still bitumen.
Raven Street Reserve is the main area of bushland on this cycle path, though there are little patches everywhere as the path follows the creak. It is worth stopping at the Raven Street Reserve to visit the senses walking trail at the Downfall Creek Bushland Centre.
Another interesting stopping is at the 7th Brigade park in Chermside. There are numerous facilities, including Brisbane's best outdoor Children's playground, handball and basketball courts, and a barbecue area.
If you are looking for a longer cycle you can continue past Virginia Station using the cycle paths on the quiet back streets to join onto the Nudgee Beach and Boondall Wetlands cycle paths. At the Raven Street Reserve end the path continues only patchily.
Though fairly short this is by far the most pleasant cycle path on the North Side of Brisbane. Perfect for a lazy Sunday cycle or a quick workout.
