Located in leafy Templestowe, the name "Down the Rabbit Hole" seems appropriate for this new cool cafe which has just recently opened in the area by John and Natalie.
Having driven past this small strip of shops many times on my way to Warrandyte, the cafe is located at the far corner - you can't miss it. For the first time, this strip of shops has been injected with new life. Parking was at its peak, which really tells you something!!
With its timber cladding and a dash of dark grey exterior paint, this cafe entices you to come in and explore what is lurking "Down the Rabbit Hole".
The interior is light and bright, with quite a modern feel. The cafe was buzzing with energy and friendly staff offering exceptional service. There is also plenty of seating indoors and the outdoor area will open up soon, allowing customers to soak up the beautiful winter sunshine and fresh air.
The cafe is well staffed in order to keep up with the consistent flow of customers! The kitchen is open plan, so you can view the chefs preparing and plating up the delicious food! John (the owner) and Matt (the head chef) are passionate about sourcing the best ingredients and produce as well as presenting each dish as an edible masterpiece!
When it comes to presentation these guys know how to plate up the food. When our dishes were served, they not only looked amazing, they tasted delicious. From the simple menu layout, we ordered "An Apple a Day" which consisted of an Apple Bircher yoghurt dish, served with orange compressed pears, fresh blueberries & strawberries and decorated with edible flowers and dusted with matcha powder. Deliciously healthy and we were wowed by the presentation!
The second dish we tried was the Yuzu Benedict - Skara bacon with crispy potato rosti, two poached eggs, decorated with hollandaise and yuzu dust. The flavour was perfect without having to add any onion or garlic - which is especially good if you are intolerant to either of these.
We couldn't walk out without taking home some of their delicious Bronuts! It is a cross between a brioche and donut. Have you tried one yet? With so many amazing flavours to choose from, including Choc/Peppermint crisp, Popcorn and Pistachio, we had to try one of each! Made in-house, the chefs create and develop new flavours daily. YUMMO!
I can't wait to return to "Down the Rabbit Hole". They open up at 6am - if you need to get your caffeine fix early, head to their takeaway coffee window. Otherwise, the cafe is open from 7am serving a delicious breakfast.
Open 7 days a week, it's a great cafe to meet up with friends or make it a day out with the whole family. I know where I'll be next weekend!
