Moseley Square in Glenelg has always been a social hub - rain, hail, or shine. It offers its customers with a myriad of options of food, drink, and entertainment and is located minutes away from our beautiful beach, which always serves for a great day out! The newest member to join the Square family is DoughBalls Pizza Place - a fantastic new addition that offers its customers with a panoramic view of the beach, fresh sea breeze, and an intimate and delicious dining experience that is both family-friendly and pooch-friendly.
DoughBalls is a family-owned venture that includes couple (and co-owners) Cat Devlin and Lincoln Spalding, along with Restaurant Manager Hannah Behn. I was able to have a short and sweet chat with Cat (UK native), who talks about her joint business venture with husband and co-owner Lincoln (Adelaide born and bred). The two met whilst working together on cruise ships around the world. After setting up home and bringing their two-year-old son Maddison to Adelaide a year ago, Cat wanted to bring her passion and experience in the restaurant industry in the UK and share it with the locals of Adelaide / South Australia.
I have wanted to open my own restaurant chain for years and we believe we have a concept in DoughBalls that will be extremely successful and will bring excellent Pizza to South Australia. We want to set up a great future for Maddison.

While the power duo work behind the scenes in ensuring a smooth-sailing journey of their business, Restaurant Manager Behn (who used to be a chef and business owner herself) has a vital role to play on the forefront, where she makes sure that the customers are being delivered with nothing but exceptional food and customer service.
After looking around for the ideal location for around twelve months, they stumbled upon their current space and instantly fell in love with the vibe it offered. Their two-story establishment has been decked out in a range of colors through their utensils and beach hut booths that effectively complement their more neutral tones through their booth-style seatings closer to the kitchen. Upon walking in, you are also welcomed by a striking dark green-lined mural that brought the co-owners' vision to life, thanks to Vinylised Signs, who worked seamlessly with the team from Total Fitouts Adelaide. Complementing the beachy and relaxed vibes of their attractive location by the bay, the idea of the minimalistic yet character-filled space to create a comfortable family-friendly dining experience was paramount, which is evident through their booth-style seatings and beach hut booths downstairs, along with the spacious balcony seating and the more formal and posh style of dining upstairs.
With the hope of providing their customers with a great and friendly customer service through their table service and hospitality, DoughBalls has been set up with the aim of providing a relaxed dining experience. With three variations, customers are spoilt for choice between the signature Doughballs, the Snowballs, and the Cinnamon Swirl Doughballs (which I am so excited to try out on my next visit!). There are plans to introduce more options in their upcoming summer menu later in the year and the aim of the menu is to provide a meal to their customers, where the ingredients can speak for themselves. Their Pizzata base (in particular) is a wafer-thin and crispy base, which can hold a diverse range of items and condiments together on its delicious and freshly baked dough that is hand-rolled in the kitchen on the spot.
Last week, my partner and I were having a particularly challenging week (as I'm sure most of you may have experienced too, with everything going on). Not feeling the mood to cook anything at home, we were recommended DoughBalls by a friend and after checking them out on their socials, we were pleasantly surprised to learn about their $10 pizza special. Seeing how we were famished, we opted for three options:
The American with pepperoni, mozzarella, tomato, and olive oil. This is a brilliant option for those who just want a simply good pizza. Its dough is light and fluffy and the ingredients on it hit the spot with delivering a burst of seriously good flavours and a hearty mouthful with each bite.
Another fantastic classic option for those who simply want something to satisfy their cravings for a freshly made pizza. The tomato base isn't overpowering but packs quite a punch, which is wonderfully complemented by the mozzarella that is melted to the perfect level of softness, whilst balancing out the crispiness from the dough.
The BBQ chicken with chicken, mozzarella, red onions & pineapple served on a BBQ base. Probably the most daring item from our selection! The BBQ base was subtle and allowed each ingredient on the pizza to have its own time in the spotlight (aka on the tastebuds). With an airy dough, the crunchiness from the onion and pineapple beautifully worked with the tenderness of the chicken and the softness of the melted cheese.
Other notable mentions that we cannot wait to try on our next visit include the top-recommended ones by the DoughBalls team - the Spicy Chorizo Pizza, the Rustichella, the Goats cheese and red onion pizza, and, of course, the dough balls (starter and dessert options).
If you live pretty close to the Bay and are in need of a brunch recommendation, then you're in luck, because DoughBalls also offers brunch options over the weekend from 10am - 2pm, including a breakfast pizza (in the form of a Nutella calzone), baked eggs, cinnamon swirl doughballs, and a vegan breakfast bowl, which I personally tried over the weekend and was left thoroughly impressed by its choice of ingredients (strawberries, blueberries, raspberry coulis and quinoa).
The upstairs area is also decked out with a fancy bar that has a strong focus on supporting drinks (and wines in particular) that have been sourced from right here in SA - from Mclaren Vale to the Adelaide Hills to Clare Valley and Murray Darling (to name a few). They also stock SA-based beers such as Pirate Life, Kol Schizel (from Big Shed Brewery) and the obvious - Coopers.

DoughBalls offers their customers a unique experience through their table service in a casual dining environment, whilst being looked after by a friendly team of individuals, who genuinely want to ensure that you have the best mealtime here. DoughBalls has put a brilliant twist on classics and favourites by incorporating their own unique blend of ingredients that work together exceptionally. Being family friendly and pooch-friendly, DoughBalls also gives the younger kids the opportunity to enjoy a three-course kids menu for just $9.90, in addition to supplying them with entertaining aspects such as drawing, toys, and a team who loves seeing a strong presence of children in their establishment.
Update as of 22/03/2020
As DoughBalls is classified as a cafe and restaurant, they will only be accepting orders for takeaway and/or delivery, but we sincerely hope that they can open their doors again for people to revel in their beautiful dine-in area and experience the magic of this small yet inviting space that is located in the heart of Glenelg. Also, while DoughBalls normally does an awesome $10 pizza special from Mondays - Wednesdays, this may vary with the current government restrictions and their ability to offer deals whilst primarily operating as a takeaway joint, so it's best to call ahead and check your options.
