Busily walking along Bourke Street with the crowds, I was stopped by a long line of patrons waiting to enter a cafe. As I squeezed past, I smelt the fragrant aromas of Pho and knew I had to return.

The cafe style restaurant, with neon signs on the window advertising beer and Pho and kitsch wallpaper of block prints of menu items, was quieter on a weeknight evening.

We wanted to order everything on the menu - rice paper rolls, banh bao, banh mi, salads, soups, and handmade spring rolls but since I had been drawn to the venue by the smell of Pho, we ordered one beef and one vegetarian, and a couple of staff recommended Vietnamese beer.

My vegan Pho was as delicious as it looked and smelt - a large bowl of mushrooms, carrots, broccoli, and fried tofu in an aromatic and flavourful broth. Accompanied with bean sprouts, fresh chillies, lemon wedges, coriander and Vietnamese mint to add to your taste. The best I have tasted in years, and 100% vegan, low FODMAP, and gluten-free.

Two floors accommodate diners - on entry level, one orders at the long bar behind which Grandma sits, hand rolling spring rolls. On the side, there is a table of Vietnamese crafts and teas for purchase. A mix of regular sized wooden tables as well as high tables by the windows are open seated.

Downstairs the basement has just as much character. Decorated with bright paintings and available for hire for private functions, you can watch the feet of passersby as you dine under bright white fluorescent lights or relax with drinks in the corner alcove.
