A Dose of Funky Cafe Atmosphere
After a disappointing experience with Marslow Sydney, I was convinced the cafe standard on Sydney's North Shore was quite basic. When my friend invited me out for brunch at Dose Espresso at Willoughby, I hesitated and tried to negotiate a change of venue. However, my friend insisted that it is a popular cafe and that I will like this cafe.
I didn't know of the existence of Dose Espresso before my friend mentioned it for the first time. A quick bit of research revealed that it described itself as 'an ambient and friendly cafe' located next to Harris Farm Willoughby. Whether you are after a breakfast or lunch this cafe has you covered.
Dose Espresso is discreetly hidden away from the busy High Street. It is not hard to see why it is so popular, the open and breezy setup makes this an ideal brunching spot or just to chill out. I can envisage myself sitting under one of the shade umbrellas and spread out with the weekend papers with a good cup of coffee.
Apparently everyone has the same idea. When we arrived, this place was completely packed and it has a nice buzzing atmosphere feel to it. I checked around and this was indeed a hip cafe with vibrant graffiti art, funky music in the background and invigorating fresh-brewed coffee aroma.
We managed to find a seat inside near the open doors and we settled ourselves on one of the communal benches. It was the perfect spot considering we wanted to get some weekend sunshine whilst staying away from the tortuous heat outside.
The menu offers nice healthy meal options as well as delicious-looking savoury and sweet light snacks.
This super-food salad tasted light and nutritious with tender moist shredded smoked trout. It was topped with a thin ribbon of crispy trout skin which added a perfect finish crunch. The poached egg however, was overcooked and we did not get that runny golden yolk when we pierced through it.
Overcooked poached egg :( Otherwise, a really good salad
The solidly-looking patty was made with fresh poached Atlantic salmon, bio-dynamic brown rice and beetroot. It was accompanied with fresh rocket, dill, black sesame, tomato salad and vinaigrette cabbage slaw. It joyfully sat on a bed of Tzatziki and hommus spread.
