A little piece of Austria has found a home in the busy Darby Street café precinct. Doppelganger Kitchen by Bernhardt provides wholesome home style food made using traditional cooking techniques. Bernhard the Austrian chef/owner and his wife Sharon relocated to Newcastle from Sydney to set up their business.

Chill out in the leafy beer garden with a German ale or two and grab a pretzel or something more substantial. All of the food is fresh, homemade and prepared to order. The portion sizes are generous and the extensive well priced menu contains Bavarian staples such as schnitzel, pork knuckle, bratwurst and schupfnudel.


The bratwurst were tasty and the sauerkraut was an excellent accompaniment the dish was great value for $19.90.

The pork schnitzel for $25.90 was a generous serve and the accompanying potato salad was just like my Austrian godmother made. Blackboard specials change regularly, there are European beers on tap and by the bottle and there is a variety of wines available as well as sprits, soft drinks, tea and coffee.

Although quite full we could not resist sampling the apple strudel which was light and crispy and full of flavour.
