The Donvale Lions Club are holding a Spring Plant Sale on Saturday 9th September, at St David's Cricket Club, in Mitcham. But if the lure of Spring in the garden isn't enough, then alongside it, the club's president will have some homemade wares for sale, a beautiful range of crafty items. And in case you're wondering, yes of course, the Lion's club members will be firing up the barbecue for a sausage sizzle and will also be selling their famous Christmas (fruit) cakes along with Lions mints and fizzers.

This will be the club's third plant sale, which is being held again due to popular demand. With the great range of plants on offer, there will be something for everyone!

There will be a vast range of native, edible and ornamental plants available. Some of the most popular varieties that will be on sale include:
Natives: Correa, Lilly Pilly, Grevillea, Callistemon, Native Mint Bush, Pittosporum (NZ & AU Natives)
Edible plants: Blueberries, Olive trees, Citrus trees, a range of herbs and seedlings
Popular ornamental plants: Nandina, Roses, Wax Myrtle, Sedums

This list is not extensive, there are many more plant varieties to choose from, but these listed have been the most popular at previous plant sales and the plants available are suited to the season.

The plants will range in price from $2 to $25 depending on species, size and maturity.

I must say, that these prices are an absolute bargain!

I'm told by the event organiser, that these plants have been propagated professionally by John Shipsey who runs a small family owned, horticulture business in Monbulk, Victoria. He has been running his plant business for over 21 years now. John was formerly a drilling engineer, before leaving to follow his horticultural passion. He is 70 years old now, never wants to retire and is supported by his family of 7 children and 23 grandchildren. He just loves propagating plants!

Being the Lion's club, as you would expect, this plant sale will be accompanied by a sausage sizzle as well as their famous Christmas cakes, mints and fizzers. There will be a stall selling home crafted items, made by the Club President, Helen Gaylard. The range includes tea towels, linen, unique embroidered products, door stops, baby clothes, toys and other assorted items.

Speaking of sausage sizzles, the Donvale Lion's club have a sausage sizzle every Saturday at Tunstall Square, out front of Dicenso Butchers who are donating the sausages. This really does helps to raise much needed funds which goes to various community groups.

Lions Clubs are part of community life, in the cities and in the country. If you're not familiar with all that they do, the Lions Club aim to:
1. 'Give Back' to the community that has given us so much for so long
2. Help the less fortunate in any way possible
3. Contribute to state, national and global relief programs whenever called upon
4. Utilise the strength of being part of a club or group to facilitate making a difference in our community

Donvale Lions club supports local, state and national charities including Coins For Kids, Licola Wilderness Foundation, Bulleen Heights School, Cord Blood and many more.

You can find out more information on the Donvale Lion's Club website and for those on face book you can find more here

So why don't you go along to this plant sale at St David's Cricket Club, 36 Mitcham Road, Donvale on Saturday 9th September. If not for the plants, grab a sausage or pick up a fruit cake, to support a good cause!
