I decided to put some fun into my morning with half an hour to spare before work, so I found myself pulling into the brand new Donut King concept store and drive-thru in Deagon.
Naturally known to serve colourful knots of delight, I assumed regular food would also be on the menu by the number of cars pulling in and out of the drive-thru area first thing in the morning. Unless Brisbane is indeed home to a bunch of morning doughnut munchers.
I parked up, resisting the urge to sneak into the children's area and take a slide down the impressive purple slippery dip and stepped inside restaurant. The décor whisked me away to my favourite childhood movie, Willy Wonka, with pinks and blues, purples and greens with clear tubes full of smarties, strawberries and cream and all those other favourites. Even the seating looked really cool; dome like seats, something you would see in a space cartoon like The Jetsons.
The glass cabinets showed off the toasted sandwiches (aah, my breakfast!), posters of delicious bouncy coffee beans advertised 'Royal Bean Coffee' and of course, there was a rainbow of candy sprayed doughnuts. You want doughnuts on a stick? Your wish is Donut King's demand! You would like marshmallows, sprinkles AND jelly with that? Sure. Nothing is considered too wacky or over the top here.
I forgot I had stepped inside to actually eat, and I'm sure the staff thought I was weird as I gasped and 'oohed' and 'aahed' at the colours and lollies and sat in multiple seats, trying out their comfort and taking photos to send to my little niece who I knew would absolutely love it here.
Bringing myself back to reality and reminding myself I am actually thirty years old, I approached the counter to order my 'grown up' chicken toasted sandwich and coffee.

Delicious, colouful Donuts!

Willy Wonka Like Decor
Barely 9am and children skipped in and out with parents who thankfully, looked and acted as excited as I was at the décor and colour scheme, designing doughnuts at the creation station and walking out with arms full of milkshakes and sugared goodies.
Unfortunately, the toasted sandwich was not the greatest, the bread was not toasted at all and I kindly assumed the staff in neon had simply forgotten to turn the sandwich press on. Or maybe Donut King are famous for Donuts and not regular food for a reason. I guess it's like expecting fireworks from a fish burger at Red Rooster!
My coffee was okay but by the looks of the milkshakes available and the smiles on diner's faces when they took that first sip from the bright pink cups full of frothy flavoured milk, I think I will be ordering one of those next time.
Another cool addition is the purple and pink bean bags outside; you can sip on a milkshake in the sunshine!
