If you're seeking a luxurious donut experience, be sure to visit Shortstop Donuts for their delectable options like brown butter and maple walnut, vanilla and Aussie honey and sea salt treats.

And let's not forget the classic American Doughnut Kitchen, an iconic food truck at Queen Victoria Market. They will be serving up their famous hot jam donuts as usual, and you can even take home a jar of their raspberry plum jam. To keep you energized throughout the day, Market Lane will be there to satisfy your caffeine cravings.

The history of do(ugh)nuts can be traced back centuries, with variations of this delectable treat appearing in different cultures throughout history. The origins of the modern doughnut, as we know it today, can be attributed to Dutch settlers in the 19th century.

The word "doughnut" itself is believed to have originated from the Dutch term "oliekoek," which means "oil cake." Early Dutch settlers brought their tradition of frying sweet dough balls to America, where the treat quickly gained popularity.

In the mid-19th century, a woman named Elizabeth Gregory from New England is said to have created the first recognizable version of the doughnut. She would fry balls of sweet dough and fill the centers with nutmeg, cinnamon and other spices. Legend has it that she even added hazelnuts or walnuts to the center, symbolizing the doughnut's iconic shape.

The full transformation of the donut into its characteristic ring shape is often attributed to a man named Hanson Gregory, a ship captain from Maine. In the mid-1800s, Hanson suggested creating a hole in the centre of the dough to ensure even cooking and to eliminate the raw dough in the middle. This innovation not only made the donut more visually appealing but also improved its taste and texture.

Over time, donuts have taken on various forms and flavours, including the classic glazed doughnut, jelly-filled, cream-filled and cake donuts.

The donut's popularity and cultural significance have made it a symbol of indulgence, comfort, and celebration, firmly establishing its place in culinary history.

This weekend-long festival is a celebration of everyone's favourite deep-fried delicacy, whether you prefer a simple cinnamon-dusted delight or an ice cream-loaded creation. No tickets are required, and entry to the festival is free from 9 am to 4 pm. Simply gather your friends, head to the C and D sheds, and prepare to indulge in a donut extravaganza.
