My husband and I left satisfied, happy and impressed.

At noon, we stepped into Donto and were welcomed by staff straightaway. Despite its small entrance, the restaurant is actually quite big. There are seating areas with low traditional tables where you sit on Japanese cushions on the floor as well as Western style tables and chairs.

They had quite a few bento options on offer for lunch and it took us a while to decide. In the end I opted for the chicken karaage, my husband the tonkatsu and we also ordered a sashimi platter to share.

Chicken karaage is Japanese fried chicken and is one of my favourite Japanese dishes. I almost always order karaage, either as a side or as part of a meal whenever I dine at a Japanese restaurant. What can I say? I'm a sucker for fried chicken.

When my bento came, I was quite impressed. It had agedashi tofu, miso soup, rice and pickles as well as chicken karaage which came with a basic salad. As I was about to die of hunger, I eagerly dug in.

When I tasted the chicken it was love at first bite. It was so heavenly and amazingly delicious. There was a crunch as I first bit into it followed by the taste of perfectly cooked chicken that was juicy and flavoursome. My tastebuds squealed in delight as I savoured each bite; it was pure bliss. I am currently salivating as I reminisce.

The salad, tofu, miso soup and rice were great also and were perfect accompaniments to the chicken. However, I felt the pickles were there to fill up the tray more than as part of the meal.

Like karaage, tonkatsu is also fried; however it's a breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet. It usually comes with shredded cabbage, mustard and tonkatsu sauce.

My husband's tonkatsu bento also came with rice, miso soup, salad and pickles. The tonkatsu was absolutely scrumptious. it was fried impeccably with a light, crispy crust; the meat was succulent, fresh and didn't feel greasy at all; and the tonkatsu sauce and mustard were the perfect complement to the pork. Just yum.

The sashimi platter arrived as we were half way chomping through our bento. I didn't think we were able to finish it all, but we did. The sashimi was pretty good as well, but I did wish that it came as an entree.

We will definitely be back. The service was fantastic, atmosphere was great and food was delicious. The only downside to it was that I felt like we almost had no privacy sitting at the lower-set tables as the people on the "next" table were literally sitting next to us. I could pretty much hear everything they were saying (even though they were conversing in Japanese), so I'd definitely go for the Western style tables and chairs next time.
