Don Dons: When it comes to places many Melburnians know - and still many more wish they did - this is one of the foremost.
Located in Little Lonsdale St this 'express' Japanese takeaway restaurant is a favourite of so many amongst the daily student/worker/commuter community in the city.
Known for its menu of bento boxes, rice dishes and curries it is rare that order-to-eating takes longer than 2 minutes. Offering both takeaway and eat-in options, it is not hard to see why this venue would have considerable appeal among the lunchtime crowd.
In spite of the speed it should be said that this restaurant does very tasty food. Indeed, no small amount of folks over time have come to prefer what's on offer here within a few moments as opposed to perhaps seeking out a more slow paced (and perhaps expensive) sit-down eatery.
In particular, the Japanese grilled chicken curry is well worth a try. For around $7 one gets a large bowl filled with tasty chicken, ginger, caulflower and rice. At first glance - especially perhaps for those yet to try Japanese curry - this may seem an odd combination. Yet, they all balance out and complement each other in a dish to be savoured. If you're trying Japanese curry for the first time Don Dons represents a good place to start.
There is no best time to go to Don Dons because it will always be busy. As distinct from this being bad, this is what makes it so good.
Perhaps not unlike Flinders Street Station at 5pm, everyone who's visiting the restaurant is going somewhere, and perhaps unlikely to stay all that long. You'll find yourself rubbing shoulders with a wide array of Melbourne when at Don Dons, and this is a good experience in and of itself.

When it comes to authentic Melbourne institutions, this is one of the best. It is economical and accessible but still a little bit special. Someone visiting from out of town who wants to understand what our city is about in the day-to-day would walk away much wiser after a visit here.
Don Dons; dependable and tasty food, and a great spot in the Melbourne CBD.
