Don Dons on Little Lonsdale Street is a huge delight with fantastic Japanese cuisine at a very little price. The shop itself is small and clean and allows for quick service for a small group or single diner. Depending on the time of your visit take away may be more preferable as there is seating for around 15 diners.
The name Don Don comes from the word donburi, which is a Japanese rice bowl dish and perfectly describes the style of presentation and food at Dons. Food is ordered at the counter from a simple one page menu and arrives to you within 5 minutes steaming hot in a large oversized white bowl. Loved favourites all appear on the menu including Teryiaki Don, Katsu curry, Sashi Don, the Don Don Box or Bento and a vegetarian salad with tofu. The meals come served with a steamy curry sauce or vinaigrette broth atop steamed white rice or traditional Japanese soba noodles in the case of the salad.
The fresh and super quick food at Dons is a local favourite in the area and as such the restaurant always has diners enjoying the tasty Japanese cuisine.
Prices all fall below $10 and are all budget friendly. My party of three dined upon the tasty Vegetarian salad with a tangy vinaigrette with cold salad and cold soba noodles and Chicken Katsu with a medium curry broth that thickly coated the white rice upon which it sat.
