Tasty, affordable and quick Japanese food
Fresh and tasty, cheap and super fast service is what Don Don, the tiny Japanese restaurant located on the busy streets of Little Lonsdale, next door to Melbourne Central is best known for. During the typical lunchtime rush, expect it to be busy, often with long longs that snake out the door. But the lightening speed of the cashier and chefs out back means the wait is always short. In most of my visits, by the time I had ordered and paid for my meal, it was waiting for me at the side. It's like magic (unless of course I constantly am just stealing other people's order but unlikely) and the flavours are always consistent and tasty.
Expect a line during peak hours, but the wait won't be long
If you want a seat inside the small establishment then I suggest getting there just before 12pm or alternatively do what everyone else does, get take-away and sit across at the State Library Park and enjoy the sunshine.
The cheapest option is 'The Tofu Curry Don' starting at $5.90 and the sizing is generous. If you want to splash out and loosen the purse string the most expensive dish on the menu is the 'Sashi Don' for an extravagant (insert sarcastic tone) $9. However my favourite item on the dish is the Don Don Box or you may refer to it as a traditional Bento box, which comes with fresh fluffy rice, chicken and beef, and some salad (both veggie and fruit). The sides like the salads occasional change depending on the season, which is an added delight for those who like to be surprised.
The interior is simple and no fuss. Don Don embraces its simplicity and no frills agenda with both the layout of the restaurant and menu. This place is the pinnacle of fast food. If you want a big feed served fast, then I highly recommend giving this place a try.
