Following the sold-out success of The Maltese Falcon, Independent Theatre returns this August with Friedrich Schiller's Don Carlos, in a thrilling new translation from Mike Poulton.
This nail-biting saga of love, suspicion, betrayal and religious intolerance in Spain during the reign of the Inquisition is an Adelaide first and will feature sensational performances, a spectacular set and stunning specially-made costumes!
Tickets are now on sale for the strictly limited season (9 performances only).
Regarded as one of the greatest political thrillers in all literature, audiences can expect to be enthralled by Mike Poulton's fast-moving, modern translation, with each new scene more brilliant than the last.
In 16th-century Spain, the Inquisition is in full swing, burning heretics at the stake.
Crown Prince Carlos is betrothed to Princess Elisabeth of France – until his father, King Philip II, decides he should take Elisabeth for himself.
Trapped in a spy-riddled court, the hot-headed young prince's hatred for his father knows no bounds. Nor does his unrequited love for his beautiful young stepmother. Carlos entreats his friend, Rodrigo, Marquis of Posa, to act as a go-between. Instead, Rodrigo decides to convert Carlos' dangerous passion into a rebellion against Philip's oppression of the Netherlands.
Can Rodrigo shield Carlos from his enemies at court, while opening the prince's eyes to what a humane ruler might achieve?
As thrilling as Hamlet and a gripping as The Tudors and The Borgias, Don Carlos is a riveting tale exploring the timeless issues of liberty, justice, power, tolerance, freedom of conscience – and true love.
The lavish production is directed by Rob Croser and brought to life by all your Independent Theatre favourites – Stuart Pearce, Ben Francis, Will Cox, Madeleine Herd, Emma Bleby, Keith Wilson, David Rapkin, Matt Hein, David Roach, Bronwyn Ruciak, Thomas Tessema and Elias Pinero Ritchie.
