Coffee and skip the cake @ Dome Kalgoorlie
In a town that seems short on good coffee shop options, The Dome in Kalgoorlie appears popular. With a selection of booth or table seating available on the oversized floor plan, customers steadily trickle in.
The picture menu looks enticing, with options covering every meal of the day. Ordering the Salmon Eggs Hollandaise with a side of bacon from the All Day Breakfast Menu, the plate presents well. Although the hollandaise sauce seems to be a bit thick and - dare I say - not homemade, the dish is palatable.
The dessert menu reads like a roll call of decadence, offering options such as Chocolate Mousse Cake, Lemon Lime Brulee and Fluffy Scones with whipped cream and jam. Sadly, next to nothing is available. Whilst Dome advertises "Our Fridge - Full to the brim with cakes, logs and slices", it is actually nearly empty. This appears to be the norm, as it was also the case on two previous visits.
The coffee is good, and reasonably priced, starting under the $5 mark. There is an extensive tea menu, milkshakes and smoothies, as well as slightly more exotic options like Granitas ("a cross between a refreshing drink and a light dessert") and Espreski's (premium iced coffees).
Dome is presentable, if not a touch generic. The service is mediocre and whilst there appears to be numerous staff on duty, the tables remained cluttered and dirty. If you are searching for somewhere to dine that offers basic hearty food in comfortable surroundings, then Dome will please. If however you are looking for something a little more upmarket, or to satisfy a sweet tooth, then you may be disappointed.
The Dome, 149 Hannan St, Kalgoorlie, is open from 6.30am to 6pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, and from 6.30am to 9pm Thursday and Friday.
