Heroic Tourism , supported by Sustainable Communities, are hosting a 2 day ethical tourism experience, exploring dolphins in tourism and discussing the alternatives.
Day 1 is being held at the
Adelaide Sustainability Centre on Franklin Street from 6.30pm on Wednesday 7th March 2018, with a showing of the multi-award winning 2009 documentary film "
The Cove ", (12A), followed by a hosted discussion with drinks and nibbles provided. Day 2 is the following Saturday 10th March 2018 with an early swim with wild dolphins, or watch if you prefer with the
Temptation Sailing Cruise setting off from Glenelg at 7.20am.
If you haven't already seen this film, it can be a little difficult to watch, especially of the dolphins in captivity in Taiji, Japan but the passion and lengths that
Richard O'Barry and his supporters go to expose the dolphin abuse and serious threat to human health is mesmerising.
Ironically, Richard O'Barry was the head trainer for the five dolphins who collectively played
Flipper in the popular TV series in the 60's. He spent 10 years capturing, displaying and training dolphins, but then the next 40 years undoing what he had done. Richard has done some incredible work all over the world with releasing those in captivity and educating the public to put an end to the abuse. Although he is now banned from Japan as a result of his exposure in the film, he continues to promote his
Dolphin Project and seek support to increase awareness for every dolphin out there.
Australia does have its own captive marine animal facilities which regularly get featured in the media, with
Sea World, Gold Coast being the biggest attraction and recently the
Dolphin Marine Magic attraction in Coffs Harbour gaining attention after their youngest,
2 year old dolphin died in 2015 . However, there are alternatives such as
Monkey Mia in Western Australia where wild dolphins can be hand fed, and South Australia's very own
Temptation Sailing Cruise that guarantees swimming with wild dolphins out at sea. But one question to ask is, even if these dolphins are free to swim away, if you factor in the potential for behavioural conditioning to influence free will, that's okay? Right?
Entry to the film night on Wednesday 7th March is $10 on the door (no tickets) with food and drinks, and if you want to join the group on the Temptation on Saturday 10th March, you can
book directly with them for a swim, or watch sail.
Join the discussion with others who feel the same about protecting these beautiful, and intelligent mammals and spend time enjoying their character and charm, especially before the water gets too cold!
