Doherty's Gym is, arguably, the greatest gym in Melbourne for many different reasons and the perfect way to start/end/divide your weekend or any other part of the week.
The fact that Doherty's boasts fantastic equipment, great atmosphere, helpful staff, extensive free-weights, unique equipment, boxing facilities (including ring), cheap membership and low cost ($10) casual visits is merely the tip of the iceberg.
A key ingredient in Doherty's supremacy is that the gym is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year; it literally never closes. This does not mean that members armed with a special card can swipe in 24 hours a day with not a staff member in sight, like some other gyms that make the 24/7 claim. Doherty's is staffed all year, and all around the clock. Feel a bit sluggish after Christmas lunch? It's okay, you can have a guilt crushing legs session because Doherty's is open. Can't sleep at four in the morning? It's okay, you can have an all exhausting chest showdown, with yourself, because Doherty's is open.
For those wanting some additional inspiration, or to get out of an exercise-rut, it is the perfect place to see new exercises being performed by people whose bodies are testimony to the fact they know what they are doing. However, if you are a seasoned pro, with cuts on your cuts and 25 inch arms, it is the perfect place for you to make connections, gain inspiration and continue your quest to destroy the limits imposed on you by your own body. Doherty's also has food, coffee and protein available, as well as a pro-shop with all sorts of lifting and boxing equipment/supplements available.
Working Out at Doherty's could almost be described as one part gym, one part theatre. Nowhere else in Melbourne will you be able to see professional body builders mixing with first time weightlifters. It is not uncommon to see pre-competition bodybuilders, both local and international, giving their pose down routine a final touch, clad only in a bikini and tanning oil, in front of the floor to ceiling mirrors. Neither is it uncommon to see world class boxers and martial artists, battling it out in the boxing ring or on the bags, heavy to light, within the boxing room. Although the idea of man-mountains strutting about oiled up and fighters destroying each other in the ring may paint a testosterone smeared picture of aggression, un-inviting and intimidating, the fact is that Doherty's has a great 'all-welcome' atmosphere. Although some of the members seem more animal than human in appearance, with muscles on their muscles-muscles, the level of approachability and the friendliness of the people in the gym is a factor that will keep you coming back.
The gym is also instrumental in organising Professional Body Building shows and is saturated by the rich history of the sport, clearly visible on the photo boards that adorn most walls of the gym. Between exercises it is easy to get lost looking at the photos and signed memorabilia that surround the gym. All of the great Muscle Royalty features in these boards, from old time favourites Arnold, Lou, Franco, to newer man mountains Ronnie and Jay. It is a great experience to look - in photo form on the walls and the physical forms around the gym - at the evolution of the body's capacity for growth and at the same time be surrounded by the equipment that has helped facilitate that growth.
Doherty's shows you clearly that the only thing stopping you from achieving a healthier, stronger body is the commitment to do so. Doherty's Gym provides an exciting place for you to exercise that never closes, and has limitless variety available. The only thing this gym can't do is lift the weights for you.
