The Dogs' Refuge Home in Shenton Park has around 100 four-legged friends patiently waiting adoption at any one time.

To help care for them while they are waiting for a second chance at a happy life, the Dogs' Refuge Home is holding a fundraising, two-day home open on Saturday, October 23 and Sunday, October 24 from 10am to 2.30pm each day.

It will feature a massive jumble sale, book stalls, plant stalls, doggie merchandise, dog kissing booth, raffles, kids' activities, Wag Bags, food, cake and coffee courtesy of Antz Coffee Co, City Farmers Dog Wash, Houndstooth Studio and more.

The plant stall this year will be the biggest yet and the home says it has been overwhelmed with donations of CDs, DVDs and books.

The open day is sponsored by the City of Subiaco. The home will use the weekend to raise funds to support abandoned dogs desperate for a second chance at a happy life. The refuge urges people considering a dog for their family to visit them before going to a pet shop or breeder.

The shelter at 30 Lemnos Street, Shenton Park, Western Australia is open from 11am to 4pm, seven days-a-week excluding some public holidays.

Every year, the Dogs' Refuge Home takes in more than 1000 badly abused and neglected dogs, or those that can no longer be cared for, or are unwanted.

Opened in October 1935, it is one of the oldest animal welfare organisations in Australia. The home believes that dogs are entitled to the same love and respect they give unconditionally to people.

A pro-life policy means the refuge doesn't euthanise healthy animals, believing that all dogs deserve a second chance.

The home takes as long as it needs to support its dogs in kennel or foster care until a loving home can be found and only on the advice of a veterinarian, will a dog be humanely put to sleep.

As well as dogs from all over the metropolitan area, the Dogs' Refuge Home brings unwanted dogs to Perth from around the state, working with other rescue groups and local governments to provide their animals with a second chance at a happy life.

The refuge says that without the generous support of the community and donations from dog-loving people and businesses, it would not be able to provide the vital care needed to look after all the dogs it receives.

It urges the public to think about rescuing and re-homing these dogs by donating or adopting, fostering or volunteering.
